711 square metres. About the same as in Australia then.
My block here in Japan is about 300 square metres (big by Japanese standards- most are half that size). But you can build much closer to the road here so you don't have all that wasted space in the front.

me, give me 4 walls and a roof, and a big garage........I dont really care whats prominent or about the architecture.
No sh*t. I am amazed by the uppitiness in this thread. I just took some folks off of my "would like to ride with" list. Funny thing is, N8 is still on it. Props for saying what I thought, Doug.

I think it a riot!!! :p

I've looked at a lot of housing markets in the US and cool modern designer houses are NOT what the average American family wants.... and if they do want it, they are not willing to pay the added expense for it.

N8, post a floor plan layout if you've got one, of a typical house. i'd be interesting in seeing the flow pattern.

loco, i am sorry to have disappointed you. i'm leaving the :monkey: :D .

mandi's bro is building up a $200k house in a (Dallas suburb; Frisco) 'neighborhood' similar to what you're building in, N8. i'm trying to get a picture of it going up (and of what it's supposed to look like at the end).

floor plan, that's what word.

the only thing i don't like about it is the garage -> utility room -> bedroom. oh wait, that's a little hallway. either way, i want a garage that leads to the backyard. Bath 1 looks nice, as does the kitchen area. then again, what do i know.

it must really matter to them what other la te da people think when they drive by their house?

or maybe they spend a lot of time just sitting out on their front lawn staring at their house?

and did you notice, none of them posted a pic of their own house

When I stare at my house, I realize that I didn't finish painting the trim in the corners. I would rather ride my bike, and it sleeps the same though. :thumb:

All the exterior of a typical house should do is blend into the neighborhood so that people will buy it.

The interior, however, is where your individuality can shine on...

The diagonal floor was $'s but well worth it in my opinion.

Yeah.. the fireplace is real, as in you can burn wood in it or a gas log... however it is an insert unit and not a masonry built one. I do not use a built up brick hearth, instead I like to install the unit flat on the floor so that it does not take up a lot of space in the room.

i guess like most things it boils down to a personal aesthetic...what works for you might not work for me. i personally wouldn't want a garage to be a defining aspect of my domicile (btw, that's a word for "house" us 'la te da' people use).

i'd be glad to post a pic of my house if you really want one, but i had better things to do today. if i show mine, will you show me yrs?

Yeah, I mean god forbid people will have differing opinions as to what constitutes a nice house.

are you hitting on me?

I agree (what works for you might not work for me).....but I would either not say anything or just say "I personally dont like that" instead of throwing out a "thats crappy"

I definitely didnt decide to buy my place because of what the outside looked like....I'll post a pic of mine even thou #1 on my "to do" list of house fix ups is the exterior walls

that's a fine rule to live by (didn't mamma tell us that?); just remember it's a mighty fragile glass house you may reside in.

Zero clearance fireplaces are WAY more cost effective than masonry ones.

Ok.. I am looking for interior finish ideas.

I need wall color, flooring ideas, cabinet stains....

My thoughts on this house were to use maple flooring with dark walnut kitchen cab's w/white granite countertops. The lighing fixtures will be brushed nickle as will be all the door hinges and knobs.

I am installing 18" tiles in the bathrooms and laundry room.

we went for the opposite contrast; dark granite (some sort of verde) and light wood (maple). i'm not a big fan of dark-stained wood, and have been gradually replacing or repainting all the dark oak finish our house came with.

it's probably too late for this house, but have you ever spec'd radiant heating in a house you've built? that was probably the best decision we made.

Radiant heating is a great heating system, however it doesn't make sense here. We use forced air systems since our winter is only 6 weeks long.

yeah it would be rather pointless down South.

still, walking on the warm tiled floor in the wintertime is great. and needless to say, our cat loves it. :D

Agreed... that is why I have quite using tile in the kitchens of my homes and opted for laminate flooring. Much warmer and easier on the feet.

If you were building somewhere else, would you ever spec a house with a fireplace in the kitchen?

My parents had one in their last house in VA and their one in TN. I loved it. It only sucked cutting and splitting the wood. And the odd woodland creature coming dwn the chimney on fire.

That would be something I'd only do for a client that wanted it in a custom home. I'd never do it in a spec, unless I was building a 2500+ sf house with a family (keeping) room off the kitchen.
