anyone have experience with the BombShell, Hope, Woodman, or Dia-Tech convertible front hubs? are they all the same, just rebadged? are convertible hubs a poor solution, or are they pretty descent hubs overall?

on another note, i saw a Hadley-made GT front hub on Ebay for $20. they ****ty or what?

i need either a cheap, descent quality QR hub (HAS to be 32h and black), or peace of mind that convertible hubs are a worthwhile purchase.

First,

Im not sure if the Azonic outlaw hub falls into the same group, but it was a decent hub for me. 20mm with a removable adapter deal. In a season of racing i never had a problem with the hub... I never used the converter in the azonic hub, but for the fun of it i put it in my marzocchi hub (after removing the marzocchi's spacers) and it worked the same. Seems like someone should figure out how to make some of these (maybe they already have)

I recal those hadley made GT hubs were the S@#T, they just wernt disk, and the rears had a freehub that had a problem, but if you called hadley they would hook you up with the fix for free (a friend had a set.) I also know a local shop still sitting on a 20mm GT non disk hub from the same time.... Its sitting next to the anno purple hooked bar ends, and Ti-dyed Marwi spokes.....

from my past experince with two woodman hubs and a couple of their other product have been great. everthing works like they say it will, the bearings they use are top notch also. i have beat'n the snot out of the hubs that i have used and the bearing are always in great shape. also i really like how their converting hub works.

you know, my first year at UT, i went to the game (2000). i hadn't paid any attention to UT football, Notre Dame got my attention. i only went 'cause i got a ticket in the draw, and a friend of mine was taking an RV. so we leave, and as soon as we get to Dallas, the weather turns ****ty. then saturday rolls around, and a cold front is passing through. i was fortunate enough to get Coral's jacket (she was the head twirler for UT at the time pic). so here i am in the stands, freezing my ass off, wearing a jacket that is waaaaaaay too small. and we're getting our asses handed to us. we left the stands in the 3rd quarter. ever since then, i've been pretty apathetic about losing to OU. Mack is getting a bad wrap, but i think people around campus are finally starting to realize that he's done more for the school than 99% of past coaches. whether or not he deserves the $1.7mil birthday bonus is debatable.

but anywho, i just looked at that GT hub and realized it was non-disc. crap.

I know what you mean. I am from Austin. Born and Raised.
But live in Colorado.
Even when Texas is playing very well, I'm still not convinced.
The only way I will ever change my mind is when we finally win the big game.
Which in my lifetime, hasn't happened. So anyways...
Thats a hot looking girl in the pic :)

anyways, back to the hub...you should give the Hope bulb a thought.
I converted my Front Hub from a QR to a 20mm and then
Am currently converting my rear hub from QR to 12mm.
Hope makes conversion kit for both front and Rear Hubs.
and Hope makes excellent products and I own a few including the
new Mono 6ti brakes, which Rock!

I've got a Hope Big'Un front hub sitting in a box. I've never ridden it, but from an armchair engineer perspective, the conversion looks very solid and I can't see it being a problem. Pretty simple device, after all - just some bearings and a sleeve.

Take that for what it's worth - just looks like a solid, easy conversion but I've got no real world testing time on it :D . I believe the Bulb hubs use the exact same conversion as the Big'Un.

I have a Hope Bulb conversion set-up & love it. The bulb are one of lightest FR,MTX hubs after the Kings. Ti cassette body. The conversion is easy & well thought out. Blows awaybombshell & diatecjh as far as quality & weight factor.

Hey do you know if the rear QR to 12mm conversion is for T.A. downhill frames or is it a slotted 12-10mm to use on regualr QR frames? If so, how much & where are you getting it?

whats up D?

We need to get a ride in. THen you could check out the R Hadley and the F Woodman all in one shot. Nothing like getting the feel for them yourself. You still live near campus?

If your Big'Un is a QR now, its quick to change to a 20mm, however if its opposite then it takes some work to get the adaptors pressed out and usually means new bearings in the process. However Bulds are the simplest as the 20mm adaptors are only held by C-clips:thumb:

Hope Bulbs and Bigguns have identical internals.

The changeover is pretty easy, unless your hub has been anodised. I've got two bigguns one silver, ie non-ano, and a red. For some reason, and I believe its the anodising, the bearings are a beehatch to get off the anodised cups for bolt in or the QR adaptor. I've given up stuffing round and left bearings on both of them.

Sweet hub bigguns just two problems;
1) WTF is the go with the five bolt rotor?
2) Paying someone to build them for you, lacing the suckers is a right pain I can do without
