I assume you have a DVD player... is your DVD player a DVD recorder as well?

If yes, it's easy but you still need a VHS player. If no, you're going to need one of the following combos:

- A VHS & DVD player/recorder. Could be expensive, but is easy to use, might allow you to upgrade your DVD player, and will let you consolidate equipment. Good if the wife doesn't want more A/V equipment and/or remotes kicking around.
- A VHS player and a separate DVD recorder. Good option if you're looking for an excuse to upgrade your DVD player and want something decent. There are lots of options for good DVD recorders.
- A VHS player and a video capture card for your PC. A cheap one will suffice if you're only using it for the occasional conversion - cheap video capture cards can be had for under $40. This is the cheapest option, especially if you can borrow a VHS player.

The card will come with software. If you're unhappy with it, you can look around for better stuff, but it'll come with something basic.
