Juan Williams: Ann Romney 'a corporate wife'

By MACKENZIE WEINGER | 8/29/12 12:13 AM EDT

Fox News contributor Juan Williams took some ribbing from his colleagues Tuesday night after saying Ann Romney looked “like a corporate wife” who hasn’t struggled in her life.

“Mitt Romney’s wife, Ann Romney, on the other hand looked to me like a corporate wife,” Williams said, speaking on a panel after the Republican National Convention’s speeches wrapped for the night. “And you know the stories she told about struggle, eh, it’s hard for me to believe. She’s a very rich woman and I know that and America knows that.”

Fox News hosts Bret Baier replied, “Wow, OK,” and Megyn Kelly asked Williams, “What does that mean, corporate wife?”

“What does it mean?” Williams replied. “It looks like a woman whose husband takes care of her and she’s been very lucky and blessed in this life. She’s not speaking, I think, for the tremendous number of single women in this country, or married women or separated — actually she did not convince me that you know what, ‘I understand the struggles of American women in general.’”

“Is that the same speech you heard Brit?” Baier asked Fox News commentator Brit Hume.

“Uh no. I think that was the single most effective political speech I’ve ever heard given by a political wife,” Hume said.

Later, the panel reconvened — but without Williams. Wall Street Journal columnist and former presidential speechwriter Peggy Noonan joined to offer commentary in Williams’s place.

“I want to point out that we did not kick Juan off the panel because of the corporate wife comment, we wanted to get a speechwriter’s perspective,” Baier said, to laughter.

“Although we considered it,” Kelly said.

And as Baier and Kelly wrapped the show, Kelly offered a last take on Williams’s remark.

“My final thought is, [Ann Romney] may have improved Mitt Romney’s standing with women,” Kelly said. “You know whose standing did not improve with women tonight?”

“Whose?” Baier asked.

“Juan Williams,” Kelly replied, as the duo laughed.

“He’ll be back tomorrow,” Baier said.

“We love Juan,” Kelly added.

Oh, fox news! You're so funny...

God forbid one of your contributors actually speaks his mind, which so happens is what you touted when he was dismissed from NPR. Lest, of course, his opinion doesn't toe the GOP party line.

Ann Romney had MS and Breast cancer, raised 5 kids. Kudos, but I can tell you she NEVER had to worry about her (or her kids) next meal. Or use coupons, take used clothing. Worry about how she was gonna pay for her doctor visits or medications. You lived the high life, own up to it. The whole "every man/woman" persona is bullish!t and an insult to people's intelligence.

Yeah..... to me her speech utterly fell flat. Her attempt at humanizing Romney was that they had an apartment out of college? Seriously? Everybody has to get an apartment after college, but most of us don't have millions of daddy's money to live on. Lots of people dream of starting a business but don't have 10s of millions of dollars in seed money. Beyond that it was "I feel the struggles of women!" Really? How?

Honestly it smacked of desperation, but then again I'm not a married housewife with 2.5 children.

same comments go for michelle

also a non-story, but won't get coverage, b/c that would be 'racist', even if juan covered it.

My 9yo daughter thought she seemed like "an important person." My wife thought she came off as a preachy b!tch. I'm not sure Juan Williams is too far off judging by my sample size of two.
i have no interest in watching televised political masturbation, even if it's upskirt palin scissoring linda mcmahon, so i have absolutely no input on the speech.

however, a good friend from h.s. - whose father was a career wapo fotog - landed a long gig snapping pics for the WH, and had nothing but high praise for the current & previous 1st ladies, which is to be expected.

i think what's at play here, and what will likely be in play at the dnc convention, is a projection of a-priori conclusions. there are no true fence sitters. people already know what they think; now it's a matter of talking heads responding to manufactured outrage.

if ron paul & his followers weren't so crackers i'd pull for him.

If that's the case, Ann failed last night. She was supposed to make Mitt seem less....... Aspergers Syndrome. If all she was doing was fluffing the audience, then why bother?

For the record, I have a positive impression of Laura Bush. I probably wouldn't have a problem with Miss Mittens if they weren't trying to pass her off as a run of the mill, middle class housewife.

Unless we revert back to policy being decided by the first lady's astrologer the Pres's ball and chain should be a non issue.

I don't feel sorry for Juan Williams. He's smart enough to know how much his soul was worth when he sold it...
