It depends what your rear axle spacing is and how many gears you run.

Ideally you want the distance from chainring to centre to be equal to the distance of the middle of the cassette to centre distance.

But with chaindevice and swingarm clearance to think about, it's not always possible on some bikes

yea you sometimes have to make big compromises with the chainline, but you can get away with lots of things when you have a perfectly set up chainguide

try to have the chainring lined up with between the 5th and 6th cog if you run 9spd, that would be the center of the cassette when you block the 1st cog.
