Cost of Iraq war

Before y'all went into Iraq, certain Economists estimated the war at between US$100,000,000,000 and US$200,000,000,000.

This estimate was rejected by the White House as "Very, very high".

The operational cost alone (to date) of the war has actually been about US$173,000,000,000.

A new study by a fairly respected economist suggests the total cost, including ongoing payments to injured servicemen and so on will be up to US$2,000,000,000,000. Two trillion dollars.

Was it really worth it? That's the cost of a very bad decision.

Edit: 000's corrected.

wait, trillion or billion?

How about three brazillian?

IF this admin went to war for economic reasons (oil, whatever), then I could've told them in advance that it was a bad investment. If it was for other reasons (eg. American Empire), well, money isn't really the issue.

I think you need to re-check your commas and zeros. Are you an Economist??? A number can't really be placed on the sercive men and women over there and that is the true cost.

The commas and zeros are (now) correct. Sorry Eagle.

I thought a serviceman's life was worth just under $48,000?

US$2,000,000,000 is not 2 trillion. And if the war is only 173 million so far, I think the American public would be pretty happy.
It depends on the definition of a trillion, like I said. Call it two thousand million if you like.

A US 'trillion' is a thousand million.($1,000,000,000).

Most other people call a trillion a million million. ($1,000,000,000,000). What ever you call it, just look at the zeros.
wait, numbers are different depending up where you are in the world?

555,444,333,222,111

111= ones
222= thousands
333= millions
444= billions
555= trillions

That's a "US" billion.

And we call that a trillion too.

Appologies, I have missed out three zeros on the trillion figure. The hundred millions are correct.

$2 'US' trillion does indeed equal $2,000,000,000,000.

Still, it is different depending on who you ask. Some people use the 'long scale' and some the 'short scale'.

is this accurate?

Seems like a rather low projection for an invasion/war?

I'm too lazy to google, but I wonder what the long-term costs of our Iraq occupation are projected to cost. You know, the stuff that happens after all of the fighting is over and we have to rebuild the country...

Before the invasion, then-White House budget director Mitch Daniels predicted Iraq would be "an affordable endeavour" and rejected an estimate by economist Lawrence Lindsey of total war costs at $100 billion to $200 billion as "very, very high".

First hit on google from today's news.

Keep in mind, these are the same group of guys who believe that the solution to any economic problem is cutting taxes, so they aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer...

The total cost of the war, reconstruction et.al is projected to be $400 billion by the end of FY06, about $2600 per adult American.

The real cost of the war is much higher. The damage to the rule of law by the Bush administration. Holding people without due cause or due process. Promoting torture as acceptable, ignoring the other two branches of government as it promotes it's own agenda. The 2500+ Americans killed, 20,000 or so Americans maimed, the 50,000 or so Iraqi's killed and uncounted injured, the erosion of the world opinion of America. Reemergence of religious and racial bigotry. Renewed distrust of the Government.

We will be paying for this war for many years to come, in ways we can't imagine yet.

No kidding. If God wanted them to be healthy, he wouldn't have made them sick. Or he would have created them rich. And if God doesn't want poor people to have healthcare, who are we to interfere in his divine plan?

If (perhaps more like "when") I find myself without healthcare, I will make sure to call my parents and bitch to them for not being filthy rich.

Thanks for pointing out to me how the world works, I never quite understood it until just now.

Reflux's fiscal policy lesson of the day:

Administration and Congress decide not to extend certain tax cuts past their original expiration date, let's say 12/31/05. It is proclaimed a victory, how not extending the tax cuts will provide the government a much needed $20 billion (hypothetical number) in extra funds over the next 10 years. The following week or month, tax cuts are either created or extended that will cost the government $40 billion over the next 10 years.

Yup, your post is definitely on the right track bro.
