Somehow I doubt it, though damn I wish it were so. I'm sure that as cash-only clinics and pharmacies become more prevalent, our government will work to outlaw them in order to protect the big business of Insurance companies.

However, the idea of a cash-only medical center targeting middle-income families, or cash-only pharmacies is completely awesome! I know that at least through AFLAC your employer can set aside a portion of your earnings for medical benefits pre-tax. If you're using a cash-only system, you can set aside enough for your annual doctor's visits, and not just for co-pays and the like.

I don't need this now, with my current employ where we're spoiled with great coverage...but it's conceivable that in the future that will change as premiums continue to rise. This year my employer had to end their in-house rule of 100% coverage by the boss, and employees split the cost with the company of the increase in our premiums.

Oh woops - the darned blonde roots keep getting blonder :D I just wasn't paying attention to spelling.

Well that's why they're saying families are paying a smaller amount for serious illness, and cash only for the minor stuff...

Ewww - imagine getting cancer and having no insurance! You'd never get it after diagnosis...

http://money.cnn.com/2005/02/02/pf/debt/health_bankruptcy.reut/?cnn=yes

The study, published in the journal Health Affairs, estimated that medical bankruptcies affect about 2 million Americans every year, if both debtors and their dependents, including about 700,000 children, are counted.

"Our study is frightening. Unless you're Bill Gates you're just one serious illness away from bankruptcy," said Dr. David Himmelstein, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School who led the study. "Most of the medically bankrupt were average Americans who happened to get sick. Health insurance offered little protection."
You guys prolly saw this already, but here it is again...
