In hell. Welcome!
No it is not. Those are inflated numbers that the hospital publishes as list price. When it goes through insurance underwriting, the numbers will be cut to fractions, and the actual bill he eventually sees will be even lower, very different, perhaps zero.

Medical care also costs money in Canada, just because you never see the bill doesn’t mean it was free, sorta like how that guy got a bill but it’ll still be free/mostly free to him. Not arguing that health care coverage shouldn’t be freely available to everyone, but it costs a metric shitload of Loonies and Toonies to keep somebody in the hospital for two months, even up there in mooseville.

I'm familiar. I've spent a lot of time in emergency rooms. But the scale of magnitude of that back and forth explanation of charges being submitted is worth discussion, and that's mostly the reason I posted it.....to entertain the people that live in a first world country like Canada.

Your assumption that these universally disappear is just that at this point though, especially as we watch this play out in a new context of covid. I've had this kind of crap play out for years over a 20k surgery before that ended up destroying my credit over a bill from a specialist I never saw and hence could never pay. This is going to be a mess.

The difference between a "free market" healthcare system is that it is designed for profits and when you will die your demand is unreasonably high. Look at the cost difference between a simple elective surgery like breast implants vs a simple life saving appendectomy, the difference can be 10-100 times higher.

Also 2500 new cases in Florida today, nice work.

I have no idea where I am
On yesterday’s hike there were about 20 or so First Responders with multiple vehicles in the lot where I parked. Found out what trail they were on as to stay out of their way in case it was a rescue. But apparently they were just training. They left cigarette butts on the trail and not one of them was wearing a mask.

This area is very conservative politically to the point that it has a racist reputation. I see several Confederate flags Up there.

Contrast that with BLM protesters who almost all wear masks and are certainly not Trump supporters.

Wearing a mask (in this area of N.C. at least) has become a partisan line. You can just about know someone’s political affiliation by it. Totally insane.

Considering the primary purpose of a mask is prevent the wearer from spreading the nasty to someone else (IE consider the existence of another human being), are you really surprised?

It's the same thing on this coast......and everywhere apparently.

Lots of people screaming about their right to self-determination while eagerly awaiting their orders from Q-anon

But NC is performing so well. Pretty impressive how y'all are still making Covid with exponential growth!

if this is florida, we can assume many of the other republican-controlled states are similarly hiding their numbers. https://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/20200611/fired-scientist-rebekah-jones-builds-coronavirus-dashboard-to-rival-floridarsquos?template=ampart
Awesome.

While NC is usually a red state, our Democratic Governor has been on top of this from the get go. However he constantly has to fend of teh stupid who want to sacrifice the masses for Lord Economy.

Less than 50% mask use at a farmer’s market I walked through (on the way to the Japanese bakery). And this amongst the most favorable demographic, if you will.

People have bored of it and moved on, look at the federal leadership, when was the last time you saw any of them wearing a mask. It's summer, warm and if I ignore it that means it's gone away like mango said it would.

It is a pretty complex comparison considering differences in the number of different taxes and income level. But according to this we pay more taxes.

However you look at it if I considered the cost of my healthcare into my tax, my personal tax rate would go up by 5%. I am near the higher end of the payscale for a good paying profession, it would be 10% or more if I was early in my career.

According to this, Canada spends 10% of its GDP on healthcare, it is 17% in the US.

To pile on the dead-horse, the other thing a lot of 'muricans working corporate gigs miss is how expense private insurance is.

Up until very recently I worked freelance and bought private insurance. My monthly insurance premium for my wife and I was more than my mortgage. Granted we have a very reasonable mortgage payment, but we also had one of the lower premium high deductible plans. When I switched to the corporate gig, one of the biggest pluses from my perspective was the health insurance. I think my new premium is about 15% of what my old one was AND I have a tiny (relatively speaking) deductible.

Healthcare for profit should be a crime.

This. We tend to ignore the number our employers generally provide as a "courtesy" so you can see how expensive insurance *actually* is. The other thing that we overlook is that those dollars *could* be going in our pocket if the insurance was more sanely priced.

Agreed. It's a travesty. (Un)Fortunately, there will someday be a reckoning when we're spending 30% of our GDP on healthcare... and the whole thing comes apart at the seams. Shit can't go on like this forever.

Wifey watched two rich, older white couples at he grocery store going on a loud rant about the COVID hoax while not wearing masks. Were very upset when they were to to put masks on or leave.

There are very few shoppers that wear masks at the local grocery store. And only in the past few weeks have the employees been wearing masks. Stores are now starting to have employees testing positive. Yet the general public is just going along like there is no pandemic.

Herp-tee-derp.
