so if the styrofoam in my helmet has a crack in it, does that mean my helmet is dead?

this can be either good or bad. bad b/c i dont have money to replace it and that ill probably end up using it if its bad. good b/c i have a reason to buy a new one.

so what kind should i get? i really want a TLD one but dont have the dinero like i said. what do u guys think about the fly lite III?

I like my Giro Mad Max helmet. Wasn't super expensive and was the only one that my LBS fit my head between the Bell and Giro one's.

Once it bites the dust a TLD will come. Like you I am in the same boat with $$$ but it's your head we're talking about. My head's worth $300. LOL it was worth $100 at one time but I haven't cracked or really hurt the Mad Max yet.

The 661's looked good as well. Just make sure to try one on before you get one. Some helmets just fit funny

I am gonna buy a Mad max to for the new season. In titanium /red. Although i am planning to do that. So far i've tried on the Azonic t-55 and asx.. all small/medium.

And a Bell Bellistic. Those are all low budget dh ff helmets. For now more then $150.

I have a hard time believing that a helmet that costs 300.00 but has the same certification as a helmet costing 1/3 of that will protect your noggin any better. helmets do not prevent concussions but they do prevent broken heads. If it is cracked or broken at all replace it. you can get a quality helmet without the gucci factor that will keep your head from cracking. Just remember kiddies, Looking good is cool but does not make you go faster, bigger, better.

care to explain????
Your brain floats within your skull surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid, which cushions it from the light bounces of everyday movement. But the fluid may not be able to absorb the force of a sudden hard blow or a quick stop. So basically even with a helmet and a hard blow to the head you'll still can get a concussion. Take a look at a NFL football helmet which is extremely strong and very padded, way stronger than any MX helmet out there. Basically its there to prevent you from cracking your head open and also help soften the blow but it won't prevent a concussion.

A concussion occurs when your brain slams against the inside of your skull. the impact of the brain against the skull is what causes the brain to swell. A helmet does not prevent this from happening. If you slam your heleted head into a stationary object your brain (which is floating in fluid) will still move. A helmet can help but not prevent.

yeah I get that part...maybe I should have been more specific by saying: I have ridden with many people (most on this board) and wearing a helmet when they crashed definitely saved them from a concussion or worse....D

It's all based on severity of the blow.

Besides looking good the Troy Lee is lighter and has better ventilation. That is what you're paying extra for. Also if you crack the visor it is easy to replace. My friend picked up a Dianese helmet, it looks sick and light weight but he crack the visor and he is having a hard time getting a replacement.
A special paint job maybe considered a Gucci Factor but I don't think the helmet itself is.
I suggest you contact a few bikeshops and see what old helmets they have on sale. Usually they will sell them cheap to make room for new stock. That's what I did and I got a 2 year old D2 carbon for about $160 off retail.

Putting flames on you helmet will make you fast. :p

marlopez if your helmets cracked replace it. As for what you replace it with you have allot of choices. Remember to make your decision based on safety first and appearance second, point to that is there are some very good helmets and some that look very good. You mentioned the Fly Lite III, very nice helmet and what I used last season and will be this season. Light, comfortable, and very strong, you wouldn't go wrong with this choice. Pics of mine....here and here Good luck with whatever you get and have fun riding.

I liked how it fit an it cost 50 bucks. But when comapred to the 661 it is exacty the same like literally no difference, i dont know if it is made from the same mold or what

yeh concusion proof helmets are a crook. have a friend who has a high risk of concusions while he played football. so the genius football coaches gave him a concussion PROOF helmet, and bye the way it didnt stop his concussions. go football coaches i solute you for proving that you are absolute morons.

ohh and for paying 300 dollars for a helmet just buy a mx helmet. dot 3 rated so they will save your life on heavy impacts and they will withstand a multitude of hard crashes without having to be replaced. only downside is that there is less ventilation and there a lot heavier but just something to think about.

It might not be a bad idea to get a nice light helmet like 661, mad max, ballistic... for freeridish/pedaly stuff. Then get a moto helmet for the shuttle/lift high speed DH stuff. You could get both for less than the price of a TLD.

troy lee helmets are lighter, but definitely do not have very good ventilation at all. especially compared to a mad max.

Your gay!

Troy lee's are not even snell approved nor is any other Mtb helmet, so if you hit your head a lot then get a MX helmet.

And if you or your team is sponsored by said company your opinion doesn't count. :)
