My front triangle is cracked, not on a weld but near where the shock mounts on the DT.

I'm pissed because I'm supposed to be going to Whistler on Sunday.

Mines an 01, think they will do anything about it?

I have never heard of broken DHR's. Some pre 1.5 HT models had some issues with ovalized HT's. This can be fixed with a steelset.
All broken links will be replaced at no charge for what I know.

Yeah, I have a steelset already so I wont have that problem....

I think I found another crack, same mounting spot, lower down by an inch

I am not sure this IS a crack in the tube. Might be the powder only. You can see the shockmount is welded at each corner. Send the pic to Turner and ask them.

1st is where the shock mount part is welded to frame, in a curve on top of DT
2nd is same but an inch or 2 down. Cant see that 2nd is a crack from this pic

i have seen marks like that, extremely similar to the picture, i didnt take the paint off, and ive also seen cracks on the front end, between a gusset and one of the top tubes, that and the ovalizing.

but still, the DHR is an extremely durable bike, everything breaks sooner or later but with the DHR its definitely "later".

At the last race I did I laid it down hard in a corner in the woods and smoked a tree. I dented the downtube where the upper shock mount is and bent it (just a weee bit) but it didn't crack. I hit the tree with so much force that when my rear wheel dropped it actually ripped the tube of my romic in half!

I know dude, I rarely crash but when I do crash I make it worthwhile. When I hit the ground i think I dislocated my finger but popped it back in - either that or I broke a few bones at the base of it. It still hurts a lot (same hand as when I broke my ring finger earlier this year) but I'm racing tommorrow cuz I'm already falling behind in points now that I've missed 2 races.

Have you talked to greg or Casey yet about it? I know it won't be under any sort of warranty being over 3 years old, but they will do their best to work with you.

I've owned an '02, 03 and now 04 model with zero cracks. Matter of fact my '02 still shows up at races in VA & WV under the guy I sold it to who loves it. And my teammates '02 model was sold to a guy in Cali and then recently bought by friend in TN who is racing it full time now. He won Expert 25-29 at Snowshoe on it!

Yea, I took second and lost to my own bike.
Ah woe is me. :nopity: :D
Yep, those DHR's are strong, and if something does come up, they will take care of ya.
I have been on them for 3 whole seasons without any problems.

Actually the starter of this thread isn't far off from those specs ;)
Yeah, except I'm 15.5 y/o and about 140 pounds

I have emailed Turner, and called and left a message asking them to help me out with it and read my e-mail as soon as possible...
Anyone think its possible to get a new frame by Saturday night?

Powdercoats don't crack without the metal beneath it cracking, stretching or compressing. If there's a change in the powdercoat that is not an externally produced scratch, then the metal beneath it has moved.

Ohio the praying mantis has mentioned issues with the older system of shock mounts like yours but I haven't seen enough of them to offer any info.

You could be right. I was thinking that the PC layer might be thin right there, and the PC could be old and brittle. Again, call up Turner, and tell us what they say.

well, yeah but it really doesn't take a lot of force to do that to a romic :D at least with me it didnt...

BTW, if enough people post in this thread the bike will fix itself.

My 03 cracked at the main pivot on the front triangle.

I looked at the 04's that were first run and they have a bridge welded at this point to reinforce the area. Most the problems with the 03's were with the swinglink and the main pivot on the swingarm itself, but mine was the first I had heard of a problem with the front triangle. There is a fix for both the swinglink and swingarm main pivot, but reinforcing the front triangle isn't really possible without stripping, welding, reheat treating and repowdercoating.

After noticing the crack, the bottom bracket area did seem underbuilt, especially considering what a high stress area this is.

Now the good news. I took it to Turner since I live close to them. Showed it to Dave. He looked at it for about 5 seconds, didn't try to accuse me of abusing it, didn't try and weasel his way out and say "oh, thats the first one I seen do that". Obviously a man of integrity. He just said "Yeah, we've had a few break there, we beefed up the first run of 04's and the 2nd run has a completely redesigned bottom bracket and swingarm. Let me go ahead and warranty it and give you a new front and swingarm"

Now keep in mind the swing arm wasn't bad and would fit the 04 front triangle. But the 04 swingarm is beefier and Dave didn't want me to have anymore problems.

30 minutes after I arrived, I walked out with a complete 04 frame. I have to say, Dave is one helluva nice guy and stands totally behind his product.

In regards to your 01, my son is still on my original 01 and it works as the day it was new. My other son is on an 03 that we have had zero problems with, he's only 110lbs so I think it is pretty unlikely his will break like mine.

Turner warranty for 04 is 2 years, but I think all prior years were for 1 year. I think expecting a warranty replacement on a downhill bike that is 3 years old is asking a lot. But they are good people and may workout a crash replacement or something of that type. I would be surprised if they still have any old triangles around there. I would have certainly settled for a new 03 triangle on mine. I would definately give Dave a call. Good Luck.

I had a 01. I bought it from I guy in Canada, he raced it for 6 monts, I used it for 2 seasons, now the new owner runns like mad on his first season.
He have only broke one mainpivot axle, caused by a too soft shock.

Yep, these frames holds up pretty good.

Sh!t!!!!

Mine too. I just went downstairs to check on mine and it's cracked in the same place. The last time I rode it (last weekend), it started making a creak that I couldn't fix. Guess that was it. We'll see what happens monday I guess.

Yeah only reason I noticed mine was cause I was changing the cranks and spotted it then. Otherwise I would have most likely kept riding it until it completely sheared off.

Mine isn't cracked all the way through like yours but I'm sure that wouldn't be far off if I ride it again. I'm so bummed. I really really really like that frame. I am the original owner and paid full retail so maybe I'll get some good treatment. I bought it last september so I'm within a year as well. I like the fact that I can run any shock on this thing.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think the 03 was probably one of the best looking downhill bikes ever built. Ironically, I had just bought a Fox pro pedal shock for mine and was installing it and the cranks when I noticed the crack. Now I have a brand new shock and it won't fit my new frame. So I'm back to the Romic. I was gonna have the pro pedal PUSHed as soon as it was ready for a rebuild. Now I guess I'll put it in the classifieds.

To be honest the 04 really grows on you. It almost never looks as good in pic's as it does in person. I'm standing on the edge of saying I like the looks better then the 03. Prior to having the 04 I would not have even considered saying that, even though I had already seen several 04's at Big Bear.

I'll try and post some pic's of mine tomorrow. I think it will help you with your 03 withdrawals. I customized the stickers, most people have a love/hate relationship with the new sticker kit. The way I modified it looks really REALLY good IMHO.

Well, I got a crash replacement and they overnighted it with saturday (mostly at my expense).

They are really, really nice there and helpful. I was dealing with Greg, he's a great guy.

Definitely alot better than my experiences with King and FSA.

The new 04 came this morning (10:30 am) and I worked on it for about 45 min until I had to leave to work. I had a new wheel built at work (I work at a shop but unfortunately am a sales man) to fit the new dropouts and then went home to finish building the bike.
Went together beautifully.... rode it for 5-10 min in the front yard and I love her. The romic is surprizingly nice, alot nicer than I expected. I had an AVY on my old one so now to get it reconfigured to fit my 04, I will have to pay ~175$ to get it reconfigured (new parts are needed).

Post the pic of your sticker kit ASAP as I'd like to see it.... Might spark an idea for me.

THUMBS UP TO TURNER!
(I wasn't even original owner)

Many good reasons to buy products from these people. This story is just one, Turnerbikes is great!

I love the looks of the 04's. Much better now, than first time I saw a proto.
I still think the 00-02 are the most beautiful frames ever made.

Nick, that's awesome. Post some pics up huh? Sounds like a great set of people and an excellent company. Glad to hear that you'll have your own bike for Whistler. Have fun.

Yeah I switched to fox propedal shocks as well. You can cut off the reservoir and attatch with hoses like push does. I'm going to see how much he charges for this. I've seen pictures of how it's done and it doesn't look too daunting. I've got a tap set for threading the hose inserts.

I've got a few friends with 04 frames. The 03's are my favorite designs still. I can't get excited about a new frame without even having talked to turner yet. Right now I just have a broken, creaky bike with an uncertain future. I just broke my foot last thursday (different bike) so this actually may be a good time to have discovered it. So yeah I'm bored..........show me your sticker mod man.

Let me know if you want to sell your fox damper cheap. :p
