Hi! I need to remove my crank arms but I don't have a crank arm puller tool, Is there a safe way for me to remove the crank arms without damaging the bottom bracket? Something like a McGuyver designed tool from my garage perhaps...lol... :D I started banging it with a hammer but I stopped when I realized that I could damage my bottom bracket this way. I'd hate to spend $14 for a tool I'm on gonna use once or twice. thanks. :help:

hmmm I used a hummer before but with wal mart bikes and always get the craks very damage, I suggest to you buy the tool, cuz is cheap than a new BB right?

trust me. You'll need the tool again in the future if you plan on riding a lot. I sucked up and bought mine a few years ago and I don't use it often, but I've probably needed 7 or 8 times. It's not that expensive anyway.

I just lay the bike down flat on the ground, remove the crank bolt, lay down on my stomach and yank it off with my teeth. Aluminum is pretty soft so you can usually get your incisors in pretty well.

buy the freakin tool

If $14 breaks you, this sport will be a big disappointment to you.

Actually, when I worked as a mechanic, I was told by the head mechanic that if we had a crank where the threads for the removal tool were stripped, to remove the bolt and go ride in the lane way until it loosened off. Of course you can damage the crank that way if your not really careful to stop as soon as it comes loose. When dealing with a stripped crank we didn't give a rats ass as it was getting chucked anyway.

You can also buy some self extracting bolts. That can be useful on the trail if ever get really serious chainsuck. Personaly, I'd buy the tool. Can't own too many tools.

That's a fine way to remove the cranks if you never want to use either the cranks or the BB again.

There's no McGuyver-esque tool, Kornholyo, if you want to remove your cranks, buy the proper tool.

Shimano makes some great self-extracting crankbolts that I transfer from crank to crank, so I still don't own the tool... But the crankbolts aren't cheap, and are harder to get than the tool so you may as well just buy the tool.

I just bought the tool today..thanks guys...
Just make sure and thread it all the way into the crankarm before trying to extract the crank or you might actually strip out the threads on the crank after spending your time and $ on the proper tool...
