Crank Bros. Eggbeater Problems?

I love the eggbeaters, but one pedal has developed a side-to-side play. Can this be tightened or is it defective? I have only used the pedals for 2 rides so far so abuse or wear is not a factor.

also, the Shimano rep told my shop that the eggbeaters only use plastic bushing internals. Is this true and will people experience play or broken bushings over time as well as added friction?
I can only put so much stock in what a competitor's rep says but does anyone know?

How much side to side? Mine have developed a very small amount also, but not enough to notice.

Years ago when I got my first Times they did the same thing. I was worried that they would continue to get worse. They never got any worse and years later are still running strong.

I think a small amount of play is normal after a break in period, but keep an eye on them to see if it gets worse. I'll be doing the same with mine.

The one pedal has quite a bit of movement. Maybe 3mm or so. Enough that it makes a noise when climbing. I get my spin going and I can hear the pedal clinking from side to side (yes, it's the pedals. It goes away when I put another set on). I don't think it is normal because the other pedal is fine, otherwise those are some huge tolorances!
I grabbed some new ones in the shop and wiggled them and they also had a tiny bit of side-to-side play. Nothing close to what I have but that was just in my hands and not mounted to a solid part and I could see movement.

The owner of the shop had one eggbeater self-destruct (don't know details) but replaced it and no problems since.
My teammate has had them for a while with no problems at all although I did not ask if they were loose yet.
I am going to try to tighten the pedal this week... we'll see.

The FAQ on the crank brothers site mentions something about play being normal, but I don't think they mean as much as you have. Also, I think they use one bearing and one bushing. So do plenty of other pedals, and I think the buchings are replaceable...

Check out their website and call their tech support and I'm sure you'll have all your questions answered.

I'm not positive about this cause I've never taken off that little rubber seal, but if there is a nut behind it you could try and tighten it. Maybe it backed itself off a little bit. Mine have been rock solid (literaly!) very little play if any. Call them or e-mail them I'm sure they can help.

So Cali
my pedals developed some side to side play, but only on the left pedal. it seemed to have a lot more friction than the right side too. but while riding i could not tell. but when i was at sea otter i visited the Crank Bros. booth and asked about it they said it was normal, but if it bothered me they'd replace it right there. so i got a new left pedal, easy as that. they carry a life time warranty(i think?) so you can just send them in and they'll get you new ones
