I meant the guy who you said destroyed a bunch of Times and then started using Crank Bros. He did replace the spindles in the Times at some point? So they are available?

Pontier is a title isn't it? I'm trying to find "more pointy". I think I have to leave the i in the first part.
OH that guy, no not that I am aware of. He broke the pedal bodies repeatedly.

Pontius is the title i believe. pontier was a typo on my part

Sorry, I'm Canadian ..sorry...
I'm a fan of the Crank bros. I have very little ride time on TIME pedals, so no real comparisson there. I've had Shimano's though, and personally perfer the CB's. I run Mallet's and Candy Ti's (and one day Quattros....) and much perfer the float and ease of release. My old Shimano's realy held on even with the tension set as low as possible. The entry is easy too, and they do shed mud as they claim. I don't go much over 8 feet in the drop department, but they've (Mallet's) held up just fine to my abuse. And the traction plates(I run the deep plates) do work somewhat when your unclipped, but nowhere near the grip of flats.

I rode Times for a while and loved them until I started sliding sideways as the shoe interface wore. Made my legs tilt outward somewhat and I didn't like that. I also bent both pedals and don't recall any real bad hits (had plenty of course). I then switched to Mallets. I never really liked the rolling entry and had difficuly getting into them. The release was consistent and the held really well. Did not have the same sliding problem as the Times - I noticed that the new XC Times have fixed this problem but not the DH's yet. The little replaceable plates became shin shredders after a couple of days out. They are nasty. Never tried either in mud (we are in a desert here) but I'm sure they would be great.

Ultimately, I could not get used to the entry of the Mallets and switched back to Shimano. When I took them off, I discovered that one of them had a bent axle as well.

The Shimanos are not perfect but seem to be the best of the bunch for me.

I've run SPDs since 1991 and Times since 1997. I got the Z's when they first came out and used them about a year in non-DH use. I got a second pair for my DH bike and they lasted maybe 5 runs until I broke a portion of the cage off (I'm 138 lbs. BTW) - I didn't know it was gone though until I unclipped.

About 1.5-2 years ago I got a pair of the Mallets. They are very similiar, but Crank Bros was the first to make the shaped bars vs. a standard round spring type bar (new time XC pedals now have a shaped bar, but it looks a little better than the shaped crankbros. version). Both have adjustable float by rotating the cleat. Both of these pedals are sensitive to the shoe tread/cleat interface area - you can't have interference or they won't work well (I would say the mallet has slightly more of an issue, but this makes it more grippy when you are riding unclipped). The standard crankbros cleat isn't as durable as the standard time cleat, but supposedly the quattro road cleat is more durable on the crank bros (I guess you could buy some if you wear your cleats down alot on the mallets). The Mallets have better mud clearance than the Zs. Crankbrothers CS is a lot faster and easier to get in touch with vs. Time. I guess the biggest issue with mallets is the axle bending and biggest issue with the Zs is the breaking pedal body - personally I would rather have my axle bend then break off the pedal body.

I recommend and use the crank brothers Mallet and have many pairs of em :thumb: I got the IH/MadCatz team hooked on the Mallets during the first US Open in 2003 when they saw me riding around with them and I happen to have a new pair in the box in my car for them to check out (they though I was a rep or something at first, heh)...

Also, how about the guy above who basically said that Times suck, because he can't do tabletops in them. Well, in that case, mine suck because I can't do back flip tailwhips to manuals with mine. Stupid pedals. :D
E-biking 101.
Hey! How about some reading comprehension here? I said they sucked cuz my foot would clip out while doing tables...not because the wouldn't allow me to do tables! And instead of e-biking i was on them for a full year. Personal experience goes a long way buddy. :D

I know I was just messing.
Honestly, I never accidently unclip from my Times, but everybody has different experiences. To be honest, I don't have very many problems with clips at all. I switch back and forth from Times to Shimano 959's on my trail bike, but back in the day, I ran Onza pedals for two years, so maybe I am just easy to please. :p
