these are new-ish (5 rides in a month), and the right spindle is oozing thick green stuff & the cage(?) inside the platform indexes to next position, or 90 degrees, while the pedal itself rotates smoothly.

did i over-tighten the pedal?

Check the spindle, I had a set that did that and found that I had broke the spindle.

The proper fix is to replace the pedal with a Time Z or Z control. The superior pedal Crank Bros. is copying.
