Crank-Peddle Debacle

I have a truativ howitzer with a pair of crank brothers 50/50 peddles in it, but when trying to remove the non-driveside peddle it just continues to spin. I see that the metal insert inside the crank arm is spinning as well. I'd like to be able to save the peddles but I could care less about the actual crank. Has anyone had experience with this and would be able to give me some advice?

put the crank in a vise, use a punch or something similar to whack the pedal & insert out w/ a hammer. then take it to your LBS and see if they can get SRAM to warranty it.

Got SRAM to take care of the crank, now just trying to save the pedal because its the only one Ive got. They were pretty new so loosing them would really suck.

do you have the pedal with the stuck insert removed from the arm?

if so, use a vice or some vice grip pliers on the insert, then use a pedal wrench or allen (depending on the axle) to try and get it free.

Absolute worst case, I'd say ***CAREFULLY*** take a hacksaw to the insert. Cut GRADUALLY until you can get it removed.

No, ideally I am trying to figure out how to get the insert out without damaging the threads so that I can just remove the pedal. Its spins freely with the pedal but Im not sure whether to try to heat it or bang it out or what

Seems like a load of work just save a CB 50/50 but I would have a couple cold beers and do the following...

-remove cranks from bike
-place problem crank arm in the vice...pedal end facing out.
-mark two lines to cut on the left and right side of that insert
-grab my DeWalt cordless cut-off tool and do work!

"pedal and insert fall out...put the insert end in the vice, twist off the pedal, and mail cranks back to SRAM...drink cold beer.

More an OCD of not wanting to lose anything since I can pretty much do whatever I want to the crank at this point. Ive got a fridge full of beer and full access to a decent supply of powertools.

What baconandbeer said. I would use a hand tool (hacksaw) just so that I would be less likely to cut too deep. Me and power tools can be a bad combo. But that should be easy to do. The insert is already loose and it may be that a single cut followed by prying the cut open will suffice.

that's why we drink it here
A bit late to the party, but here goes anyway.

Notch the crank and insert with a hacksaw or dremel. Stick something flat in the notch like a screwdriver or a dime. Remove pedal as usual.

Edit: a torch might help too.

Ended up banging the pedal insert out with a hammer and lots and lots of beer. Got some stress out in the process as well. Might not be expensive pedals, but theyre my pedals.
