cranks, BB, and weird crack/snap noises

my new specialized is acting strange... as i suspected it would from the big hits until i replaced some of the components.

on the non-drivetrain side of the bike there seems to be a "clicking/snapping" sound coming out. pedaling up into a manual, high gear pedal pressure, and simply coasting while preloading the full suspension as if getting ready for a hop all cause the noise.

i'm not sure if this is the crank or the BB. i haven't had much time to look at it or take it apart. (spend the few non-work/non-school hours riding the bike)

someone told me this might be caused by very small amounts of metal shred off the crank from when it was initially put onto the bike.

i was going to pull the crank, clean, lube, and reinsert it to see if the annoyance went away, but i'm thinking i might need new cranks and a BB.

unfortunately i don't have a crank puller, and wanted to know if there was a ghetto method to do it. also any recommendations for a new BB/Crank setup on a 2002 Specialized Enduro would be helpful.

Crank pullers are cheap. And once you have one you will wonder how you ever did without. Get it, try it and fix it :) It will either be the crank needs tightening or the bb is a little loose and needs adjustment. No biggy as long as you fix it soon :)

ok i got it fixed!!!

here's what i did...

tried taking the crank off using my awesome muscular power...
after 5 seconds i went to the lbs to buy a crank pull

took off the bolt on the crank, threaded in the nut for the pull, put the handle in and started turning... now it got REALLY hard to turn and some funky noises were being made, and this was scary, but it was all good... it just takes a lot of work getting the crank off...

noticing dirt and **** in and around where the cranks attach i grabbed the handy bottle of WD40 and sprayed until i got high. whiped off with a rag, and then took a mega huge air compressor and shot everything clean out.

then... i got me some grease and greased everything back up. pushed the crank back on, and tightened the bolt...

and voila! bike is silent and stealth once again

bottoming out on your Enduro....I just built up a 02 frame for my girlfriend...I noticed that the cranks bottom out, more than occassionally....I have a small 80mm fork on there now....It does not seem that going to the 100mm(which I will be mounting this weekend) will raise the BB height enough to get rid of the problem....I am using 175 mm XTR cranks......have you had this problem???

later..

i haven't hit it yet, unless going over some massive log obstacles that really require a bash guard. i'm pretty good with pedal placement when it comes to not hitting jutting rocks and trees. so i haven't really knocked the cranks or pedals around at all.

put a small raceface bashring on would be my suggestion, and maybe pump the rear air shock up a bit more. the stock fork on the enduro is 100mm, so possibly anything equal or greater might help out.

I wouldn't ever spray WD-40 on a bike, as it is a solvent for the most part, and will not be completely removed by air spray.

Careful cleaning with a dry (maybe slightly damp with water or solvent) rag is all it should need, and I wouldn't suggest greasing the interface between the crank and bottom bracket if it is square taper. If it is a spline, use grease.
