I had to learn way more than I ever wanted to know about this last month.
- It's possible to come up a loser in the genetic lottery and wind up with a body that is just more prone to heart disease (familial hypercholesterolemia for example)
- It's possible that it was heart related but not a heart attack (it's just easier to call it a heart attack in a public statement). For example, a coronary artery aneurysm
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is not unheard of cause of death for high performance athletes dieing very young of heart attack. My wife's old Crossfit coach died of that this spring. My dad has that condition too, so I'd already scheduled an appointment to checked out for it myself, even before reading this.
