Can you run mtn bike shifters with road bike der's?

Someone asked this on another website so it got me thinking... is it possible?

Yes - you cannot run Campy stuff with Shimano, like sram, but you can run mountain and road stuff. Many folks run road rear ders because the cages are short. You get in trouble with road ders with big cassettes some times. I have run mountain ders on the road bike with a 32 tooth cassette.

*edit - one more reason to like Shimano. You can mix their stuff up.

Yep. Shimano even makes a 'flat bar' shifter for that very purpose.

edit -- I'm running an xt der with my dura ace shifter on the crossbike.

I hope you are all nervous that you were thinking the same thing as me.

If you quote the person you were talking to they will know you're hitting on them.

I don't care to make the effort to quote 3 people.

I run an XT shifter with a 105 rear der. Works like a dream.

Rear yes, front, no.
Front road deraillers have different leverage than mountain ones do, so the indexing does not work well. Unless you have friction shifting up front - that will work.

My Palomino came with an Ultegra front der.

Yes. Dh'rs and slalom riders are known for running short cage road rear ders in a shimano drivetrain. As for the front, why would you?
