Somebody needs to do something different, because what's happening now isn't working. Despite the obvious pitfalls of getting out early, I can't see many better options. None of the options are 'good'.

Here's problem #1--

No matter WHAT we do, when Americans leave, under any terms, the insurgents can claim 'victory' which will be fairly legitimate in the eyes of the exact people to whom America needs to appear victorious.

Saddam had a legitimate 'victory' in the first Gulf War simply by being alive and in charge at the end. Middle Easterners have a different way of looking at things, and the US is looking a fool no matter who you are. (Again, something which could and should have been known in foresight way back at the start of all this...it's not hard to predict...)

So we're screwed either way, really. Although I did extrapolate an intriguing idea this evening...why not have a referendum among Iraqis about whether the US should leave? This way, when they get the inevitable 'yes,' (even if we have to make it come out that way) the insurgents' crowing about 'fighting us off' will lose any real impact.

Trouble is then they can claim that they cowed the US into submitting to the will of the Iraqi people.

The best way out is to establish a strong, stable Iraqi regime that can take the credit. Not easy.

Watchin' you. Writing it all down.
I think cutting and running would be pathetic at this point. It would not improve conditions in the short term or the long term.

What's annoying to me is that there is no plan in place or at least not one that has been communicated to the American people. Unfortunately it seems that even the military has been provided with the barest of goals and objectives.

Or sufficient manpower to do the job properly.

In the end though this is going to be more about the mid term elections then it is about accomplishing anything in Iraq.
Politicians really should not be allowed to make important decisions...
