The 909
I raced. Got semi muddy, finished poorly.

A 1/2 mile stretch ran parallel to the ocean, basically in the water...my bike is borderline fvcked. :(

I did my first two cx races this past weekend. Raced men's cx4 saturday and sunday with a field of 60+ racers both days. Saturday's start was a bit of a clusterfvck with me having pinned my race number on upside down. An official told me I had to flip it just before they blew the start whistle, so I sat there for 10 or 15 seconds while everyone took off. I was a little fired up after that so I passed over 50 people to end up in 8th place. Sunday was better as I a) had my number on correctly and b) got called up to the second row for my saturday finish. I had a decent start and just tried to maintain on what was a pretty difficult course. I ended up 4th on sunday. It was pretty painful but I had a great time and look forward to doing more.

Good job! Are you hooked now?? That's how the addiction starts :) I raced Saturday and won, beating my teammate Evan Plews. He and I are now tied for that series lead, should be interesting at the next race. On Sunday I was riding well, but I had a bad crash and I think a mild concussion; it took all of the race to recover the ground I lost, but I ended up 15th. The races up here have been crazy, 1200+ competitors every Cross Crusade

Finally had the time to build my CX bike... the kids have been racing them since vegas (including an elite win in Ga yesterday, and some local whoopings)... I am going to suffer it up this weekend in Bennington...

I guess it's too late to start doing the PT for my bad back... but piss and vinegar will elevate me up the hills (i hope!)

Damn nice bike! I really like Justin's and he seems very happy with it. At the last race he was fielding a bunch of questions from spectators....he is a very good representative.

<edit> BTW, I like the skin suits :)

Thanks for the pics!
Dude, with a sixpack of barriers like that, flick from the dt straight to the shoulder, it should be a little quicker, and most certainly take less energy. Practice enough and it should become automatic... I may be old and broken, but man, can I pick up my bike fast...

I practiced both ways and I was of the opinion my drop/remount was quicker holding the bike by the top tube....I felt slow sliding the bike off the shoulder and it was a fast section

Had a great time at Rainier on Sunday. I suck and I'm slow but I'm learning more about cross. I was the very last person at the back of the beginning of the C race. Passed a bunch of people but can't seem to remember the combination to my hurt locker. I've got some weird viscous goo that forms in the back of my throat and I start dry heaving and gagging even when I'm only going about 70%. Nothing like dry heaves when you aren't even working that hard. The course was excellent, better than Alpenrose IMO. I heart cross and it's nice to be racing again after 10 years off.

Are you on a frame that you built? If so, I'd like to check it out sometime

Cross frame ordered! Should be here Tues or Weds, built by the weekend. It'll be overkill for my piss ant cross skills, but that's ok.
Then I can join the cool winter kids club!

How did everyone do this weekend? Anyone actually race in the rain? We have been having really nice weather and it was warm and sunny for both days. We had our Halloween race this weekend in Astoria and it was a two day race....plenty of action. I cramped really bad the first day and ended up 21st and on the second day I crashed and then flatted but was able to manage 15th. This cross season has been hit or miss for me with lots of crashes and mechanicals. Oh well. BTW, I did see bigfoot riding his bike today! Check out the rare photo of the elusive beast!

I came out of retirement this past weekend and raced the Masters division at the Local Ride Pumpkin Cross. It was really fun and I did far better than I had thought considering my Arthur Fonzerelli training regime. That is where you train a couple days before the event because you decided on the Tuesday the week of the event that maybe it might be fun to cough up a lung. The Polar said I averaged 183 bpm for the 40 minute race with a max of only 186 which is lower than I used to get just a few years ago. My last race was the Test of Metal in 2005 or maybe the 24 hours of pouring rain in Whistler in 2005.

Looking forward to three or four more cross races this year. I was 18th of 32 starters in Masters 30 plus. Considering that I am nearly 51 and started training Tuesday, I am happy.

How did everyone do? Cold and wet? We had our first muddy race for the Cross Crusade series and it was a gut buster. The course had a pavement section and a long, straight, flat (mostly) gravel section and they were hell. Those sections were followed by lots of corners and lots of sprinting, combine all of that with mud and it was a hard race. I did reasonably well and placed 12th. I really hope I can bust top ten this year

Nice Finish!

I did my usual and settled into and easy spin at the start. I felt great today, started slowly picking my way through people and rode one of the run-ups on every lap. I wanted to give a go on the big one at the finish but decided against it on every lap because there wasn't a free line. Some dude ejected directly in front of me on an off-camber downhill a few hundred yards before the finish hairpin and I managed to elicit some serious cheering for avoiding him and riding it out. Flatted at the end of my 3rd or 4th lap and rode/ran/jogged/slogged the entire last lap of the race.

Can you pinch a tubie? It's loosing air so fast that I'm doubtful that any sealant will fix it. I already ripped it off and will send it out for repair but we only have two more races left and I can't find much in the way of quality tubies from suppliers in western states. Going to call Tufo tomorrow to see if those Cubus tires exist or are just vapor.

You probably have a nick from all of the rocks on that course. I don't think you can pinch em
That's what I thought too, but there aren't any cuts in the casing.

I've got some Cubus tires coming this way so hopefully I'll have time to stretch and glue them before the weekend. The tread pattern looks like it should do well in the mud and with any luck, that's exactly what we'll have for the next two weeks.

UCI races in Boulder were all that was happening here this weekend. I passed on the 50$ entry fee and rode the Pint to Pint MTB ride instead. :)

I didn't race this weekend. School is kicking my ass, so I wasn't able to ride all week (8 days of no riding), compounded by the fact that I got an epic charlie horse by my wallet after getting knocked down at a Rise Against show.

So I'll leave you with action shots from last week's race courtesy of Jerry K. aka CarbonFetish.
