I love the blatant contradiction of the police report with video evidence, really damning.....except if New York cops can get away with 50 rounds into an unarmed suspect I'm pretty sure they can get away with this.....

This is obviously a Critical Mass ride, and why you might think I would support these riders, I grew up in NYC.
I don't know why these people think their civil rights would protect from arrest from the NYPD. It would protect them in court, and I believe all of them were released.
But, of course, it is punishment enough to spend multiple hours in The Tombs.
I am not sure what I would do if I was in that situation. I bet if I stopped at the light, I would not be arrested.
None of them were charged with traffic violations, so I think it was a green light. I ****ing hate critical mass, but the cops were out of line.
You want to deal with critical mass you do one of the following:
1) Work with them to accommodate the event - encourage them to apply for a permit, so that they can be escorted and alternative routes can be provided to commuters. This is what SF does.
2) Fine them for traffic violations. They want to be treated like road vehicles, treat them like road vehicles and ticket them for every run stop sign and red light, every obstructing an intersection, etc. A lot fewer people will show up if it costs them $200 - $1000. This does not require knocking people off bikes and cuffing them, and will help pay for the cops time and effort.
3) Actually start planning your city around bike commuters - provide wide safe bike lanes, plenty of racks, and driver/rider education.
edit: Joyce's 5 minutes of fame is my new favorite spank material.
1. Critical Mass sux ass
2. Video 'journalists' love Critical Mass so much, they follow them every where to document their peaceful law abiding message.
3. NYPD doesnt put up with anyone's crap. They just dont care because they have better things to do than deal with a bunch cry babies on bikes suffering from martyr syndrome.
4. Critical Mass sucks ass.

I have a new argument defending Critical Mass. I developed it when I met a fat ass at a party who whined about how Critical Mass slowed his commute home on one Friday of the month.
I vaguely agreed with his sense that Critical Mass is a criminal act, but later I realized this fat ass drove into San Francisco every day (I also placated a stranger I had no respect for simply to make nice).
Now the next time someone complains about Critical Mass, I am going to make two simple points:
1. Every person at Critical Mass is a bike commuter. So when you see 20, 50, 100, 1000 riders taking up the streets one evening a month; those people the other 30 days of the month reduce traffic by not driving, making your life much happy. And if you drive, you make everyone else's life that much worse.
2. Do you drive every day? Because I got cut off/harassed/almost killed by a driver yesterday/last week/last year. Since you are so quick to group all cyclists as scumbags, why don't I punch in you the face because another driver almost killed me?
