i started to bleed my avid juicy 3 brakes yesterday and i discovered that all the oil inside is dark/black. im pretty sure this is not a good thing. so right now, im wondering if its possible to flush out ALL the oil and start from scratch? im pretty sure the new oil and the old black oil mixed together and affecting my braking, they still feel spongy, not as tight as i want them.

is it a good idea to flush out ALL the oil? how would i do this? i do have the avid syringes with me.

as far as I know, you can do it one of 2 ways. You can do an extremely thorough bleeding of the brake. You'll need to squeeze the lever a LOT to get all of the brake fluid out of the caliper.

The other way is to hang it by the caliper with both ends open and allow it to drain completely, the re-bleed it.

Im over here now
does it taste different? if so it doesnt hurt to rebleed the whole system with fresh fluid...especially if you have the syringes.

pushing new fluid through the system should take out most if not all of the old stuff.

Get Avids bleed kit (or Formulas, it fits too) and get the job done.

If you have really dark, contaminated oil you will need to flush the system, and that's a breeze with the syringes and couplings that you get in the kit.

Bleeding Juicys without the kit is possible but very messy in most cases.

is bleeding and flushing the system the same thing?

It's on the same level.

If you "bleed" a system you will not always want to get all the existing oil out, merely get bubbles out of the existing oil.

Flushing the system is of course changing all the oil, both these actions more or less require the bleed kit. You local bike shop (that hopefully deal with SRAM) can get you one.

The SRAM product number for it is: 00.5315.017.000

It comes with a container of DOT oil as well.

Think about a flush as bleeding out the dark fluid instead of bubbles.

The dark fluid is heat damaged or contaminated. Once you get rid of it, your brakes will feel better (unless you get air in the system, f'n Avid).

Here's a start, one empty syringe on one side, one full one on the other. push all the fluid though the system. Empty the dirty fluid, reattach the syringe, refill the other syringe and repeat. Pump the brake lever once in a while (take your brake pads out, and make sure you have something to keep the pistons from blowing out when you pump). Keep pushing fluid through until the fluid out is the same color as the fluid in. I usually switch directions of fluid flow once the color starts to lighten up.

Good luck

Well, it may be a ghetto thing, but I made my own Avid bleeding kit with two big syringes, a foot of the smallest rubber hose, and two of the adjusters from Shimano derraileurs/shifters. Just take the inner, threaded cable adjuster out of the outer barrel, an then fix the rubber hose to it (you could use the one which comes in the IV-lines kits). The adjuster has the same diameter as Avid's bleed screw. Voilà! you've got a two-dollar Avid bleed kit.

Maybe I should post this in the "Tips And Tricks" sticky thread, but I believe someone in this thread can use it.

The sills on your calipers are bad you'll need to replace the o-rings clean out the pistons with alcohol then detach hose's blow them out with air compressor thouroghly clean out mastercylinder then buy an avid bleed kit (come's with dot fluid) and bleed them. You can just bleed them but that black crude will block up the small ports with in the sytem and cause you more problems. heat damage is the problem use an organic pad and change them alot...Avids suck...
