British Transport Police appealed for help today to trace a youth who was seen swinging from overhead power cables by train passengers.

The death-defying stunt happened near a footbridge over the West Coast Main Line in the Bolehall area of Tamworth, Staffordshire, about half a mile south of the town's railway station.

The bare-chested man was seen by a passenger from Lancaster who was travelling on a service from London Euston to Glasgow earlier this month.

The passenger captured the man on his camera phone and later passed the image to the police.

'Lucky to be alive'

Pc Rob Newman, from British Transport Police, said the person pictured in the photograph was lucky to be alive.

"The overhead cables carry 25,000 volts and, although the overheads had been switched off to deal with another incident closer to the station, a residual current of at least 5,000 volts would have still been running through the cables.

"Both he, and the other young person watching from the bridge, could have been seriously injured, electrocuted and even killed.

"The actions of this young man were quite unbelievable. There is no way he could have known that the overhead lines had been switched off, as the train was standing at a red signal."

Pc Newman added: "Under normal circumstances, either my colleagues or myself would be going to tell his family that he had been killed.

"It is imperative that we locate this man before he tries it again, or indeed others copy him thinking it is safe because he did not get injured."

LAKE LUZERNE, New York (AP) -- A young man shot himself without using a gun.

Damion M. Mosher, who put bullets in a vise and whacked them with a hammer to empty the brass shell casings, was hit in the abdomen by one of the shots, authorities said.

Warren County deputies said they were called to Mosher's home in Lake Luzerne on Saturday afternoon after one bullet went about a half-inch into his abdomen. He was treated at Glens Falls Hospital and was released. No charges were filed.

Mosher, 18, told authorities he was trying to empty the .223-caliber rounds to collect the brass casings for scrap.

Sheriff Larry Cleveland said about 100 other rounds that Mosher hit had "fizzled," but one was somehow sent with more force. It was unclear if the bullet ricocheted or hit him directly.

An employee of an Albany scrap metal company told The Post-Star of Glens Falls that the business pays $1.70 a pound for scrap brass shell casings.

Cleveland said Mosher's shells amounted to just a few pounds.

A male chimpanzee has been observed snatching a seconds-old newborn then eating it. This behavior has never before been documented by scientists, who say it could explain why female chimpanzees normally hide themselves away during the late stages of pregnancy.

In December 2014, scientists were studying a group of chimpanzees at Mahale Mountains in Tanzania. On a rainy day in the mountains, one chimpanzee named Devota suddenly gave birth in front of the group. Until that moment, the scientists didn’t even know that she was pregnant. In a flash, an older male named Darwin ran to her and snatched the baby away. It was so sudden that the mother didn’t even have a chance to hold her infant.

The male ran away from the group, clutching the infant. The researchers weren’t able to see if the baby had been born dead or if Darwin killed it. Either way, he then climbed a tree and consumed most of the infant’s body. The researchers could not tell whether the infant was alive when Darwin ate it.

The American Journal of Physical Anthropology[/a] in September. The researchers were studying the lengths of “maternity leaves” among chimps. Typically, female chimps leave their family group when they are ready to give birth and they deliver alone. The researchers found that females who take a break from the group for reasons other than pregnancy spend less time away than those who leave specifically to deliver.

Nishie was one of the authors of the study.

Cannibalism: A Perfectly Natural History, told Newsweek. He explained that chimpanzees have been occasionally observed cannibalizing infants of other groups, but not their own. “But there’s always aberrant behavior.”" data-reactid="30" style="margin-bottom: 1em; color: rgb(38, 40, 42); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">And such behavior is extremely rare among these animals. “Cannibalism is extremely widespread across nature, but it’s pretty rare in primates, chimps notwithstanding,” Bill Schutt, author of Cannibalism: A Perfectly Natural History, toldNewsweek. He explained that chimpanzees have been occasionally observed cannibalizing infants of other groups, but not their own. “But there’s always aberrant behavior.”

Yet eating one's own species can have some survival-driven motives, Schutt continued. A male might want to kill an infant in his own group to make the female ready to mate again. A female with a someone else’s baby won’t be willing to mate, meaning she’ll spend time raising someone else’s offspring instead of yours.

The unexpected cannibalism event left several questions unanswered. The researchers were not able to obtain DNA samples from Darwin and the baby to determine if they were related. Researchers also questioned the nutritional value of the baby’s body, as Darwin had severe diarrhea right after consuming it. They also weren’t sure why Devota had the baby in front of the others, although they speculate that she might have been a first-time-mom and not known any better.

Darwin’s consumption of his group-mate’s infant may have been a rare occurrence. However, it does give insight into why females may take leave during their pregnancy—to protect their babies from being eaten.
