British Transport Police appealed for help today to trace a youth who was seen swinging from overhead power cables by train passengers.
The death-defying stunt happened near a footbridge over the West Coast Main Line in the Bolehall area of Tamworth, Staffordshire, about half a mile south of the town's railway station.
The bare-chested man was seen by a passenger from Lancaster who was travelling on a service from London Euston to Glasgow earlier this month.
The passenger captured the man on his camera phone and later passed the image to the police.
'Lucky to be alive'
Pc Rob Newman, from British Transport Police, said the person pictured in the photograph was lucky to be alive.
"The overhead cables carry 25,000 volts and, although the overheads had been switched off to deal with another incident closer to the station, a residual current of at least 5,000 volts would have still been running through the cables.
"Both he, and the other young person watching from the bridge, could have been seriously injured, electrocuted and even killed.
"The actions of this young man were quite unbelievable. There is no way he could have known that the overhead lines had been switched off, as the train was standing at a red signal."
Pc Newman added: "Under normal circumstances, either my colleagues or myself would be going to tell his family that he had been killed.
"It is imperative that we locate this man before he tries it again, or indeed others copy him thinking it is safe because he did not get injured."
