I wish they'd have let the wanker drown. When he was doing his starvation stunt in London a while back, people used to come and attach hamburgers to fishing rods and dangle them in front of them. Good stuff.;)

His drowning would have shown some good, but network tv isn't that bright, especially abc being Disney owned. You know that with Disney everything has a happy ending. For me, a happy ending would have had Blaine floating belly down, responseless.

I will give one shot at this, because it seems like a very anti-Blaine group here.

When I first saw him, I guess about 8 years ago now, I was freaked out by his tricks and his cool demeanor.

I like some magic, like Penn and Teller. I understand the performance of magic is the show and the attitude and not necessarily the trick. I still wonder about some of Blaine's tricks though, like levitating on the sidewalk or throwing a deck against a glass storefront, and having the card stuck on inside.

But what makes him more than just a stage magician is his travels and what he and ultimately the viewer learns from that. For example, he visited the Palms Casino and Angola State Prison. I cannot think of two more opposite environments, the place where you are encouraged to indulge every sin, and your punishment for doing so. To perform in either place where anything could truly happen is amazing. Just try walking up to a stranger and tell your best joke or story and see how that goes.

His big stunts have been poorly received. I can't say watching him stuck underground, in ice, on a platform, in a glass box, or underwater is the most exciting trick I have ever seen. But I also think we as a society value instant gratification. David Blaine's trick is to yank that away, and to see what is left.

I don't think David Blaine is the problem. I think the problem is the imbicile who came up with the idea to say "or die trying" every 10 seconds while advertizing this latest stunt.

I love happy endings. Just not of the Disney variety. :thumb:
