Demo Truck Experience?

so i have applied to work a demo truck for a bike company. and should hopefully find out tomorrow to know if i got it or not. anyway my question is whether or not any of you have had experience driving one for a company. i am pretty much not going to have a home for as long as i do it. as the guy who interviewd me said..."your address will be chevy 3500 somewhere in the midwest." so kinda worreid about the not having a home base....or friends that are constantly around. but since i do want to wrench professionally on a team someday i figure it is a great start to making the connections to do it. anwyay curious if anyone has any expereince and could give me some first hand accounts/suggestions all of that. thanks in advance

got lucky. basically the rep for that company in our area knew what i want to do later (wrench for a pro team) and figured it woudl be a great way to get me started so he came and found me. it is really cool because we actually no longer carry their bikes. and haven;t for a few months but he still decided to come find me and told me that i should apply for the job. so i did. then had a phone interview last week. and should find out in the next couple days. hope it works out. gonna be a lonely time if it does but i think it will also be a blast

man, that is what i want to do; wrench for a pro team. i spent this summer wrenching for our group, Texas 4000, as we made our way to alaska, and that was so much fun. especially after crashes. only made 1 trip to a shop, and that was to get a shifter replaced. a friend of mine wrenched at the Grouse WC a while ago. he's like my idol.

good luck

Not sure what your financial responsibilities are, but I'd set up all of my bills to be paid via online banking. Hopefully, the company can set your pay through direct deposit. Then ,if you have a lap-top, you should be able to access your accounts and make sure your bills are paid on time. This is what I do when I have to travel for work.

Good luck! Sounds like a sweet job and a great opportunity to see the country! :thumb:

This is definitely something you should do. My company has people on tour all the time. What kind of specifics are you looking for?

Cool on the job, but Austin is not in the Midwest. Hope you make it to Texas though.

I worked a demo truck for Fisher/Lemond for the last year. Cool job, but the road wears on you. Will you have the entire US as your territory? If so, that can be real tough. It takes a certain type of person to enjoy that for more than a few months. Good luck with it. Will you be working alone or with a partner?

My buddy Bob is the N.E. Demo Rep. for Gary fisher. His terratory is from Indy east, and from D.C. north. He drives in his G.F. Subaru, pulling a trailor full of G.F. demo bikes to events. Not too bad. He's home now, but when he's gone, he's gone for weeks at a time. He leaves pretty soon and drives to WI.. Then he has to drive from WI. to Whistler. From Whistler he flies back to WI for meetings and then flies back to Whistler to p/u the car and drive in down to Las Vegas for interbike. Worst part? He's not sure if he'll have a chance to ride at Whistler...work sucks.

supposedly teh territory will be from approx aspen on teh west to either chicago/detroit on the east. with lines running north south through there. for a rough estimate. and i am pretty sure i will be doing it by myself no partner. so will be lonely i am sure

Sorry to confuse you. I think you and D need to go have lunch. He can wear the leather pants that make him happy and you can stare at his ass. Maybe then you will know if you really are in love with Carlos. At a minimum, you should both go ride your bikes.

Back to talking about demo trucks.

I know Bob well. Spoke with him recently. His territory is about to get alot bigger. It won't bother him much though. He does well living on the road. We spent the better part of a month traveling together in Florida this spring. I will miss ol' Bob and Rich (N.E. Trek/Klein rep).

well foudn out today it was a no go...didn;t get the job. but no big worries. i havea job so not the biggest thing. basically i was the number 2 guy because i didn;t have enough on the road experience. but they are keeping me in mind if anything else happens. so we will see. but thanks for all the replies and ideas...
