hey guys,

im looking for a new dh/fr (more dh actually) rig for 2005 and i can get a great deal on a demo 8. while the concept of a lighter and nimbler demo 9 is awsome ,it bothers me that the bike doesnt come with a 12 t/a rear axle (but with a regular qr). do u guys think that it should be a factor in my decision or is it a minor issue that wont affect the bike's performance (as i heard its super stiff already)?

i really need your thoughts here , so spill it.

thanks , gil

Since you can put a 10mm BMX axle in an XT hub, the real question is how well-designed is the rear end of the bike, and how "stiff" is it, which is directly related to the bearings/bushings and tubes back there.

Those solid BMX axles do a good job, I don't think lack of a 12mm through axle is very significant given that.

non-issue!

You can run,

• Dee-Max with bolt-on
• Chris King with stainless bolt-on axle
• Shimano with BMX axle
• Saint with thru-axle

I actually think it is a positive, you are not limited by so called "standards" that aren't very std. at all really...

I have a QR on my Army, and never had a problem with it. Now I'm using a CK hub with the stainless axle with fun bolts. Set up works perfect and in a pinch any 135mm QR hub will fit:thumb:

wow, thats old news

you can get bmx axles from BTI or QBP

The quote wars continue... And in the NSMB article about the D8, they said it was plenty still even without the thru-axel. I wouldn't worry about it, personally.

the whole point with the double rear triangle arrangement was to get rid of the flex inherent in the classic fsr design, caused by the horst link and the separate upper and lower stays, at least the demo has that going for it.

Not quite.

The point was to get the mass of the bike lower and more central by driving the shock from the chainstay rather than the shock link.
