dents in rims

While putting my new tires on my wheels the other day, I notice my rims have a couple of small dents. How much does that jeapordize the strength of the rim? One of the dents is on the "lip" (if that's what you call it) and pushes the tire in a bit. I am assuming dents in a rim are BAD and could result in the bending of the rim, but I figured I'd ask for opinions. Again, the dents are not huge, but noticeable.

Keep an eye on them for cracks. If there are no cracks you should be fine.
You think so? I would think having a dent in the side of the rim would weaken it, making it more likely to crumble when I hit 5 or 6 foot drops. I suppose if I just stick to trail riding I should be ok, but that's not gonna happen. :p

I have been riding on a wheel with some nasty dents in it for a while with no problems. But if you don't trust it, get a new rim a 6 pack wait for a rainy weekend and rebuild it.

What kind of rims are they????????

You should go take a look at any DH bike that's been ridden hard for a season - you'll see plenty of dents in the rims. They don't really make much of a difference.

When I get my tires off, I usually take an adjustable wrench and VERY CAREFULLY, slowly, gently bend the sidewall back out so it's straight. This is because I run Stan's Tubeless/Ghetto Tubeless and the dents make it harder to seal. I think bending them back actually decreases the strength of the rim, but it's a compromise you have to make w/ tubeless.

On a DH rim, little dents like that won't really hurt the integrity. On a non-DH rim, you shouldn't really be doing 6 foot drops, or you'll end up killing the rim anyway, dents or no.

umm, yeah. Those are on their way out. ;) Think about a set of 521s (now called 721s) if you wanna get all "big-drop" on it. Maybe 519s if the weight is such an issue.

Think about a DH bike, while you're at it....:p

I second the 519's, they are very durable for such a light rim.

As for the dents, I wouldn't worry about that, however those rims will self distruct with some more abuse.
