I'm upgrading my drivetrain on my demo8 with a Sram x.9 rear derailleur but I'm wondering what cage length I should run. I plan on running a 38t chainring up front with a Sram 9spd 12-26 cassette in back. Any other drivetrain recommondations will be appreciated.

Depends on how much chainstretch your bike has.

I run a super short roady(less than 50mm) cage on my 9" DH with no probs whatsoever. I'm also running an 11-32 cassette, which is a much larger range than your 12-26.

Since you're running a single ring up front, you should be able to run a short cage no prob.
