I have been watching a fairly priced Rock Shox 318 Tora on ebay but it has been cut to 7.5" How do I determine what length I will need for my bike?

Do you have the headset and stem that are going on to the bike?

Just measure them all together, minus the parts of the headset that go in the frame and you should have a ballpark number.

If your Giant ATX Pro uses a zerostack headset, you can easily approximate the minimum steerer tube length.

Head tube length
+ stem height
+ 1 inch
= minimum steerer tube length

If your frame uses a traditional headset, it's easier if you install the headset and then measure the length of the head tube with the headset installed. Same calculations apply.

The stem is what connects your handlebars to the steerer tube. Most stems range from 1 1/2 inch to 2 1/4 inch in height. Measure your head tube and add 3 1/2 inch to that. Should allow you to ballpark what you needed.

Just as an example. My Diamondback Sortie has an zerostack headset and a headtube length of 5 1/2 inch. The steerer tube of my fork is 7 1/2 inch and it works great.

My head tube measures 4 7/8 so if I add 3 1/2 that = 8 3/8 so a fork cut 7 1/2 would be too small. The seller did say it was on a Titus motolite and the specs say 5.5 head tube.

If I were in your spot, I'd probably get it. My hardtail has a headtube of 5" and the steerer tube on my RS reba is at 7.5". I only run 2 small spacers, a richey stem, and it works fine.

I have read posts from others with small frames and my measurements prefer a 90-100 mm stem so if I buy a fork that has been cut short it won't work with a longer stem. However I could always buy raised handlebars. I will watch it and if it is 200 and under I will jump. BTW I have a Cane Creek headset that came with the frame.

FYI... the measurement of 90-100mm, in reference to stems, refer to the length of the stem, not the stack height. Stems are measured from the center of the bar clamp to the center of the steerer tube clamp. Stems also have different angles ranging from 0deg to 45deg.

Regardless, I think you'll be ok. Enjoy and make sure to post up pics of your build.
