Are we ever gonna see this? Something like the old AXO Descend... I think I would be great to have a high top dh boot for racing and hucking. Broken ankles are uncool. Why do you think mx racers use them?
Have fun pedaling with your knees. Sidi use to make one, total flop. I know a guy who has some if youre interested, not sure what size. They were like 500 new, lol.
The Sidi boots didn't sell at all. My buddy has a pair and they jsut offered lower shin support and no more ankle support than a std shoe. They were made of thinner leather at the ankle to aid in pedaling.
I wear the lace up ankle supports when I ride everything from DH to XC since I sprained my ankle and don't notice it at all when I am riding. That will offer more support that a MTB boot.
A boot that offers enough support and protection is going to be impossible to pedal well in.
There are several really nice high-tops on the market right now. Addidas hematomas, that Specialized boot, and the vans 3/4 shoe to name but a few. A little calcaneous protection is about all you are going to get. And even then why not run a nice stiff light xc shoe and ankle guards ALA anklebiters or the FOX ones?
I use 661 Ankle Biters with my Sidi shoes to help protect my ankle bones when DHing. You may also want to look into vollyball protective equipment. They make ankle protection for vollyballers and as far as I know they need as much ankle flexibility as we do.
On a side note I noticed that most knee/shin guards do not cover/protect all the way down to the ankle. The lower 3-4 inches seem to be exposed. The rock that broke my leg hit right in that area. Had I been wearing knee/shin protection I would have broken it anyway. So I am canibalizing some baseball catchers shinguards and putting the front ankle protection from that onto the bottom of some roach knee/shin guards. Should help lessen any impact and at the least let me walk away with a cracked bone instead of being carried away with a broken, detached bone.

i'm to lazy (drunk) to read everyone elses post
but 661 makes a hightop and so does a specialized.
no go drink a beer and use ankle biters and normal shoes!
Vans still has a few of them, but they aren't listed on the website, and no one seems to have them in stock anymore. If you went into a shop that stokc Vans and sked to have them special ordered you could probally get a pair. I have a pair, the 3/4 ones that are higher on the inside, like Chausson wears, and while i like them well enough I think I'd rather go wth something that is easier to get in and out of in the future, Like Hematomas. Honestly I use lightweight xc race shoes 90% of the time though, and really only break out the hi-tops when i think i'm going to be doing much running with the bike during a race.
