:monkey: s,

The only three 26" UST tires I could find that are bigger than 2.3's are (1) Maxxis Minion UST 2.5 ($45 @ Jenson); (2) Contiential Diesel Pro 2.5 (ca. 67 bucks @ Braun's); or (3) IRC Kujo DH 2.65 ($38.00 @ Airbomb).

Here's the short story: I converted my DH wheels to tubeless (Using Stan's Tubeless) with my Maxxis HR 2.7's. However, the Stans' goo just doesn't seem to plug in the leaks on the HRs... t just simply leaks like a pig! :stosh: I am wondering if any of you :monkey: s have tried the UST DH tires and if you are up to it, share your experiences with them. How did they rate in terms of cornering abilities, how good it sticks to the dirt, how fast it wears, and overall experience in installation. Also, do you have UST rims or standard rims with tubeless conversion kit (e.g., Stans, etc)? This might be useful for other DH monkeys thinking of converting.

I could give digi pics on the progress of the conversion and keep an update on how it goes in the future. :dancing:

Some of the Maxxis tires aren't great with stans, and I think the Mobster just flat out doesn't work with tubeless. I haven't heard of any other DH tires that don't work other than that.

There really isn't any reason to buy UST tires IMO. You pay twice as much for a tire when you could spend a couple bucks on sealant.

Kenda tires work well tubeless, but i've had horrible luck with tubes in them.

Michelins obviously work awesome as well, since all the DH tires are UST compatible.

In a healthy tension
I converted to Stan's over a year ago and love it. The application and selection of tires to rim compatibility is crucial but not too hard. I run WTB rims both dual duty and the laser dh with weirwolfs and epic wolfs and they have had absolutly not a single problem. I also run mutano raptors on my xc bike with stans and have only a problem getting them to seat the bead the first application, then they have no problems at all, and the only reason that they are so difficult to get on is because they weigh 565 grams and have a very flimsy side wall. I run a bike shope and put Stans on bikes every week it seems and there are definetly better tires than others to use with his product. As for DH tubeless the octopus by hutchinson goes up to 3.0 and it is what cedric ran at the rampage when he won it. I have used regular tires with stans sealant on ust rims and had the best results, so there is definetly a lot of options for you, don't give up.

My belief is that if you're running a proper tubeless rim then a UST tyre is beneficial since it has a well shaped bead to "lock" it in place.

Additionally they have stouter sidewalls which is kinda required when you're not running a tube, otherwise you need to run too high a pressure.

Opinions?

I agree.

Michelins work awesome with Stans.

I just with maxxis would do a decent tubeless range - they'd certainly egt some business from me. Why make only a slim selection tubeless?

Funny, I have mounted Minions and High Rollers with no problems. Actually I have used a LOT of tires tubeless (Stans), but the only real tubeless tire I have actually used was Michi's. For me Stan's has worked fine.

I've run High Rollers (double ply), Minions (single and double ply), and Mobsters (single ply) with Stan's. Had no trouble with any of them, they all sealed up well and never gave me any problems. The rims were Single tracks and Mag30's.

I guess I need to tape the tires up (with electric tape) before I put in some Stans' goo to plug the leaks. I'll give y'all an update on how it goes.

I've done stan's conversion almost 2 years ago with my XC bike, and since then, its been "hasta la vista to the ol' snakebite flats." I waited a while for the DH version to come out and didn't want to be a guinea pig for being the first one. Now, I hear that it seems to work really good for the DHers - the coolest part is being able to get the tire pressure around 30 psi for a "plusher" feeling (for my XC bike).

As for Hunchingtons (sp???), my buddy had them for about 3 months and completely wore out the UST Pythons. These tires seem to have bad wearing issues... is that true for the DH tires? Maybe I am wrong, but my experiences lead me to think that these particular tires all could wear out in a similar matter...

Tape over the valve stem hole , not just the spoke holes. Put a small hole there with a pen knife. The stem should stretch the tape tight around it . Hope this helps.

Are there any rims that work better or worse with Stans??
I was thinking of giving it a go with my Mavic 321's & Kenda Blue Groove/Nevegal's.
Should work ok ??

Rims with a deep center groove shuold be wrapped with Cloth rim tape first. Skinny roadie tape fits right down in it and fills the groove some. Then electrical tape it.

I'm going to give it another shot tonight. What I am going to do is put in some clear tape (to cover the holes) and put in e-tape (short for electric tape) around the valve to plug in the hole. Also, I might even put in e-tape on the sides to create an artificial "groove" to prevent leaks from under the tire rim. Then I am giong to dump in some Stans slime, and then use soapy water to look for the leaks... *crosses fingers* More to come later.

I highly recomend the Stans rim strip. It really helps hook the bead.

Tubeless conversion was all good. :thumb:

Below are the instructions:
(1) Stripped the wheel down (removed rim tape), cleaned it with a rag.
(2) Applied 3M clear tape and wrapped around twice. The tape can be bought from a local hardware store for $1.
(3) Puncture a hole @ valve insert with kitchen knife.
(4) Put on Stan's rimstrip on (buy it from Stans for $40 - 50).
(5) Coated the tire rims with lotsa soap.
(6) Pop in ONE side of the tire rim (the other side is not on rim yet)
(6) Put in ~ 100 mL Stans' slime in.
(7) Popped the other side of the tire rim on.
(8) Pumped up the tire to ~ 40 psi. LISTEN FOR THE POP  (means your tires have properly sealed)
(9) SPIN THE WHEEL FOR 15 MINUTES (This serves to spread the Stan's slime, otherwise it won't efficiently plug in the holes)
(10) Ride on flat concrete for ~ 10 min to spread the Stan's goo
(11) Let dry for 24 hours... good to go for DHing!

Don't forget to wash your hands before you touch your wife or g/f... :nope: ;)

Took me about 45 minutes to do both tires (I've done it several times previously for my XC bike).

EDIT: If you don't hear a pop, twist the tire side to side (perpendicular to the plane of the wheel rims) @ approx. 20 psi, THEN increase it to ~ 40 psi.
