I (probably stupidly) want to completely strip my bike down as much as I can, to clean/check/play with it - this includes getting the eccentric out of the frame. How does that happen? What role do the 3 little bolts on the non-driveside play?

Should I leave well alone? :)

Wonder if GT has a manual on their site - off to look now.

On looking at this...

...I've just changed my mind, I'll leave it alone I reckon ;)

the 3 bolts keeps the lock ring fom coming loose/out. So briefly here are the steps as I recall them:

1) Take your cranks off
2) Remove the small (3 of them) locking bolts that are the side of your eccentric (2.5mm)
3) With a spanner wrench (red Park) in the non-threaded adjustment holes, unscrew lockring (counter clockwise)
4) Remove the dogbone (which you should inspect for wear and tear)
5) Remove the eccentric from the right side of the frame (inspect for wear and tear)
6) With the eccentric out and the shock of the bike removed...move the swingarm up and down. It should feel smooth, if not your main pivot bearing might be shot!
7) Clean the eccentric
8) Repack the bearings
9) Reassemble. when you do..make sure that the threaded holes line up with the indents on the eccentric. When you tighten the lockring, think of adjusting a headset cause it's the same principle.

Cheers Luc - I've already got the dogbone out - I can't help but notice mine has more than 3 indentations for the bolt heads - is this some sort of adjustment to alter the BB height - mount it in different places?

Of course because I've already removed the dogbone I can't undo the lockring - it only turns once then stops, do I need to force it by refitting the dogbone or am I doing something wrong ?

Cool cool, realised it wasnt unscrewing because i hadn't taken the non-drive BB cup out and it was just catching on the lip of it.

This eccentric thingy's dead easy isn't it - will buy some quality grease tomorrow - Silkolene RG2 pro is good stuff (the red stuff) IIRC?

Now that I've taken it apart I realise how stupid this question was :)

What's the deal with DHi's? I read that everyone broke them, but still loved the ride. Were they not burly enough? Or poorly designed? Has the cracking been dealt with in the new models?

Just wondering

Yes, a lot seem to break - the concentric and the rear triangle. Newer models have a beefier concentric but identical rear triangle as far as I can figure.

And yes, it rides great, canes my 222 :)

okay,
so I had a DHi... I cracked the rear swingarm near the shock mount, had that welded. Then... I cracked it on both sides right where the upper chain stays come up to the rear shock mount. Plus I cracked my head tube both on top and on the bottom all the way around where the extra gussetting is attached. I loved the bikes ride but decided that it was time to retire the frame. If you want pictures of the failures send me a PM and I will email them to you.
