I know that for a 5th Element you're supposed to run a lighter spring than normal, and let the shock's valving do a little more work. What about on a DHX? I've been told to run a spring slightly heavier than normal due to the way the valving works....... What has worked for you guys/gals?

I would think that it would be heavier than a 5th but lighter than a fox rc.

For example if you were to put a 9.5" x 3" on a bike with 9" travel, which equals 3-1 ratio, I ran a 450 5th on my bike and weigh 160.

If your bike has less rear travel with this size shock you would have a lower ratio and use a lighter spring.

How much rear travel does your Clif CatTurmoil have?

Steel springs are pretty cheap, maybe you can get a couple with your shock.

Turmoil = 3:1 ratio- 9" of travel out of a 3" stroke shock. I weigh 175 with gear, I was thinking a 500 lb spring would be about right.
