Police: Bike theft led to teen's death
Dallas Morning News
Kevin Gordon

GARLAND – Stealing a bicycle may have proved fatal for a Garland teenager.

Officers responding to a shooting call just after 2:30 a.m. Saturday found 16-year-old Dequorius Allen in Toyah Creek Lane in Garland. He had been shot in the torso and died later at Baylor Medical Center of Garland, police said.

Police said the teen and some friends stole a bicycle from Kevin Patrick Gordon of Garland, who then got his car, along with a gun and some friends of his own, and went looking for his bike.

"If he did indeed take the bicycle like they're saying, what justifies them killing him?" asked Deborah Allen, mother of the dead teen. "Why kill? You come with the gun, your intentions are to kill."

Ms. Allen said her son was an innocent victim, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Garland police said Mr. Gordon is 19 years old. Texas driver's license records put his age at 18.

Mr. Gordon has been charged with murder, and bail has been set at $500,000, according to Garland police, who say Mr. Gordon is cooperating with investigators.

Relatives at Mr. Gordon's home in Garland declined to comment Saturday.

The Dallas Morning News and WFAA-TV reporter Bert Lozano in Garland contributed to this report.

What a load of crap. The kid stole a bike - he's not innocent lady. Granted, he probably didn't deserve to be shot, but he sure as hell ain't innocent. Stupid friggin parents.

That's what you get for not burrying the body under a transition...

Didn't Dubya pass a law in Texas stating that it was legal to carry a gun and fire upon someone who either damaged or stole your personal property?

Irregarl-less, the kid shouldn't have stolen the bike, but the punishment certainly didn't fit the crime.

There are a number of progressive states that have 'shoot the burgler' laws....

Here in So Cal you always hear the parents say that Little Johnny "wasn't even in a gang" when the rival gang shot him.

I hate bike thieves an much as all of you do but you do not kill someone for stealing your bike. Plain and simple. This is what happens when friggin morons have guns. Kick his ass, beat him up, whetever. You do not shoot someone for stealing.

Breaking into your house is another matter.

I heard this story from a guy who lived in Austin for a number of years. There was a schizo guy who lived on the streets of some Texas town. One day he stole a guy's briefcase because the gub'ment was after him. A freakin judge saw this happen, so he drove down the wrong side of the street, drove ONTO the curb, got out of his door, and shot the schizo thief.

Can anyone, with direct knowledge of this story (if it exists), confirm this?

That's got just about every "urban myth" warning sign in the book.
