Well, I had been looking at the Canon G5, but.... Thats out. I went to play with it in person, and I cannot stand seeing the lens in the viewfinder! There are some other little things about it that turned me off to it also.

Now I am looking at the Nikon Coolpix 5400. Every review I have read on it is good, except for the low light auto foucs. That is not too big of a deal for me.

Anyone have any experiance, and possibly a short review? Rather hear it from someone on here than from some random internet review site that for all I know could be written by Nikon ;)

i think i would have to get the g5 over the 5400 anyday. its so much easier to use an when i was lookin at it one time the view finder first annoyed me alot but after awhil i barely noticed it. one thing i really like about it is that it has a bigger lcd and like a little display thing on top so you dont have to use the lcd to check your camera settings. least the main ones. but i think i would definately pick the g5 over the 5400. but its your decision.

i haven't used the or even touched the current versions of nikon digicams. had a 900 and 950 in the past tho. nice little cams that worked great for me. i do like my g3 a lot better :D

as for the viewfinder part, if you plan on using accessory lenses, you may find them blocked out on any cam once you start using them.

well you cant really get the s50 easily anymore since its been discontinues but i def say get the g5.
The G5 has been discontinued also..... That is why they are all on sale.

I played with the Nikon today, and it has some nice features that I wish the Cannon had. Like Burst shooting. It can take a few frames per second, would come in handy when shooting a stunt! Downside of that is it takes a loooong time to write it to memory. like... 3 minutes  They both have pretty much instant shutter release, and most of the same features. There are a few nicer ones on the Nikon, but a few on the Cannon that I wish it had too.

This sucks

The Nikon does have a better lens though, in my opinion, because is it equal to a 28mm lens. Its a wider angle than the Canon. Plus, the flash has 7 modes where the Canon doesnt.

But..... The Canon also has good things.

This sucks

just get the canon. and it also has a burst mode. the nikon has like 3fps for up to 3 frames or 1.5 fps for up to like idk how many. but the g5 has 2 fps for like atleast 8 shots. thats like the best of the options cause 3 frames isnt enough cause what are you gonna shoot that only lasts one second.

but where are you finding the deals on it. like any of the major stores. i STILL need a camera after like 3-4 months of not having one.

If it helps, I really have this serious dislike for how shots come out of the Coolpix series. They are heavily saturated. Most people don't notice it but it drives me buggy. I'll see if I can upload a couple shots this evening and give you a comparison to the way my Sony shoots.

Often, the saturated photos are very nice, but I would rather do my own saturating through Photoshop than be stuck with it.

It's one of those things that you should see and judge whether it's a problem for yourself, though.

Aperture is wider on the Canon too...

Go with the one that feels best in your hands, if you're that close to a decision on either one.

Also, check out http://www.dpreview.com and http://www.steves-digicams.com/

I was trying to choose between a Powershot A80 and CP 4300 and there were enough reviews of people dumping the A80 after a few months and switching to the CP 4300 or 5400 but not the other way around. I don't remember what the particular issues were but see if you can read actual users info b/c that'll give you a better insight into what kind of features are really useful to you and what kinds of problems/issues are popping up with the cameras you're insterested in.

I have the 4300 now b/c I liked the way it felt in my hands and the lens was sharper; better lens=better pics. :) Good luck!
