ok, so i did a bad thing, i rode my Chameleon in the city when it was snowing the other week. i cleaned it off, but obviously some water and sand/salt got on the XT disc rotor and resulted in some slight rusting/discoloring, though mostly not on the braking surface itself. that combined with the EBC Red pads (which some people swear by, but i am still skeptical about) has led to some serious disc squealling, as well as some rubbing that wasn't there before. so what's the best way to clean them, and what are people opinions of the reds? i'm thinking about trying some of the organic shimanos...also thinking about just starting again with a new rotor...

also, while examining the problem area, prophet6 noticed that my rotor is on backwards, i.e. the swooshes are facing towards the back of the bike. is this a problem, or is it merely cosmetic? if so, maybe i'll start a backwards-facing rotor fad...

Rubbing alcohol. That's your best bet for thoroughly cleaning the rotor and not causing any slippage. In terms of the squealing, you might just have to ride them for a little while before that goes away.
