I'm in the market for disc brakes. I'm thinking I like the Avid mechanical discs... Avid has a good reputation, I like the simplicity of the mechanical discs compared to hydrolic, and the are fairly reasonably priced. Any comments on the Avids? Comments on mechanical vs hydrolic?

Also, would anyone consider buying discs used? There's a lot of used gear floating around, and I've seen some disc sets go pretty cheap (~half the price of new). If the rotors are in good shape, is there a reason not to buy used?

Thanks

If you do a quick search on Ridemonkey, you'll find a few discussions regarding the performance of Avid mechs and other disc brake set-ups. To give the short answer, yeah, Avids are great, and cheap. Get em.
