I'm upgrading the disc wheelset on my bike and was looking for some advice. Two considerations high on the list are strength and a weight close to 4lbs. Here are the 4 possibilities I have found:

Alex Vectra D2 Disc

Sun Ringle Disc Jockey

Shimano XT w/ Mavic X3.1

Anyone have anything good / bad to say about any of these? Any other choices I may have missed that are similar?

Are they worth the extra pound in weight? My bike is too damn heavy right now (34 lbs) and I'm hoping to loose a pound with the new wheelset. My WTB Speed disc wheelset weigh about the same as the XT / Rhynolite combo.

if your bike is already heavy, what's a couple more pounds? RhynoLites are worth it if you get the XL's, they are welded not pinned. Mine have only gone out of true after about 6 months of ridding, and they were the prebuilt crap wheels.

I don't think you can go wrong with the XT hubs no matter what the rim. For an inexpensive hub I think it's the most durable, maybe not the lightest but definately the best value.

Yeah, definitely not the lightest. For the most part they are durable, I've only heard of one failure (compared to several failures for other types of hubs). Check the year, I believe the current crop of XT disc hubs is significantly lighter than previous versions.

Universal Cycles (www.universalcycles.com) also had some rippin' XT disc wheelset deals.

Generally not smooth. (My riding or the trails) Usually rooty, and rocky. Tech. climbs also.

You might want to consider F519 rims (which are quite light for its strength!) or 36 hole X... rims...

If you are looking to save weight you could run a lighter rim on the front wheel. Rear rims tend to get more abuse than the front and it can be a good way for some people to save a bit of weight and still have strong enough wheels.

I,ve been riding pretty hard xc on my Shimano XT w/ Mavic 317 all year, the back is a litlle out of true, but I am too lazy to do anything but keep riding/racing them

But aren't those the pinned rhyno lites? Only get welded.
The XT/Mavic setup isn't that sexy, but they'll last a good long time. I have a set of xt/welded rhyno lites and they are awesome for heavy trail use.
