Crazy kids.

I think people are going to make this a race issue and it may be just that.

I think it's more likely that some sarcastic smart kids wanted to exploit a loophole and make a statement about giving awards based on race. Who knows, we'll have to wait for the book and mini-series to find out.

Tylena Martin, a junior, said the poster had been on the door to her homeroom class where she is the only black student. She said she felt hurt by the posters and the backlash that ensued.
What backlash?

Smart ass white boys makinga point and The Man has to come down and silence his ass..  ;)

Just another example of society holding the white man back. ;)

I totally support those kids -- based on what little info I have. If the award is vaguely "African-American" and the white kid is from S.Africa then he should be qualifed. Period.

good point, and to bring up another question: when does ones lineage filter out? i mean, with the exception of native americans, we're all some form of hyphenated american. for instance, i'm native-irish-german-american....should i get special scholarships too? i don't see our nation ever coming together as a whole until we stop distinguishing ourselves amongst one another. african/asian/latin/anglo..........american should be simply labeled as AMERICAN-AMERICAN.

The very fact that an award is given to someone based on the color of their skin helps to keep the idea of racism alive. Recognizing MLK on his B-day is one thing, but to tie in an award just feeds the fire. Any award given out in a high school with a multi racial population that is not color blind is, IMO, racist.

Yeah, this thread is clearly the preserve of the oppressed.

Come and see the repression of the white middle-classes.

it has nothing to do with "oppression" or any of that crap, it's simply the fact that nothing will change as long as we're still segregating by american sub cultures. for instance, if you ever came to live in the states VB, i'd call you an AMERICAN, not PANSY-AMERICAN, even though that's your background:devil:

Woo Hoo, I'm white middle class now! :p

This is exactly where I thought this would end up. It is damn near impossible to have a convesation about anything racial without it digressing into a pissing contest.

For the record I'm Chicano. This isn't about white people complaining about stuff, this particular case is about the PC police at this school overreacting. It's also about the embarasment of some adults at having their award for being black and smart challanged.

How does the award progress the discouse on race releations? It doesn't, what it does show is that in that school, black kids are singled out for their acheivments based on their race. How does that show equality?

At my college we have a student group for Chicano students which I have always refused to join for the same reason this award here is dumb, and that is it doesn't matter that a student is black, brown or white. I don't need to join a club that says "Yea, we are educated brown people, woo hoo!"

If the school wanted to do something to honor Dr. King thats great, he was one of our greatest Americans. King was about seeking equality.

ditto.

I, personally, I'm cool with an award going only to black kids. There are all sorts of scholarships and such focused at different groups. I'm just tired of improper labelings. I know it's semantic, but A-A doesn't *just* refer to dark skin people and it's a silly and unfair label that exludes non-blacks from Africa. And it also excludes blacks who aren't from Africa.

And the admin at that school need to have some sense knocked into 'em.

I can see that my comment went right over your head, like I expected it to. Just stay in the donut shop where the only thing you have to think about is chocolate or glazed:devil:

Where was the birthplace of KK?

If I had to guess, I was gonna say Miami, FL, cuz I remember going to their main production plant down there as a child almost 30 yrs ago.
