This really bugs me:

Iran's bizarre international conference questioning the holocaust ended with the country's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, saying Israel will soon be eradicated.

"The Zionist regime will be wiped out soon the same way the Soviet Union was, and humanity will achieve freedom," he said, according to Iran's official news agency IRNA.
The headline is Ahmadinejad says Israel will soon be eradicated.

This language is obviously used to imply that Ahmadinejad seeks to literally destroy Israel by military force. This has been done time and time again.

Now we read what he actual said:

"The Zionist regime will be wiped out soon the same way the Soviet Union was, and humanity will achieve freedom,"

This is talking about a political change, not the murder of Israelis and the destruction of Israel. It's a totally different thing.

The same tactic was used when he supposedly called for Israel to be wiped of the map. The actual quote was about Zionism, not Israelis.

I'm not a huge fan of what Iran stands for or where it's going by any means, but I find it fairly disgusting that the western press is so complicit in this demonisation of the guy. It's so unconstructive and simply lays the ground for public acceptance of military action. Fantastic thing to do.

Well Changleen, whether by political or military force, he's clearly calling for the destruction of a particular political state. How much more "demonization" do you need? He's attending a holocaust denial conference and talking about getting rid of Israel.

Yeah, I was actually going to add to the end of my post "He's doing a good enough job of demonising himself".

The point I'm trying to make is the destruction of a political entity is nothing like the actual destruction of an actual physical state, but the press wants you to think that's what he wants.

I can't read his mind, but he's never said "I want to rain down a firey death on all Israelis". He's saying "I want the Zionist regime out". It's a different thing. Bush calls for regime change all the time, what's the difference?

I wonder what it must feel like to have burly shirley definitively catagorize and effectively belittle something I thought was important to say. It's never happened but I'm sure it would cause quite a stir deep within if it did.
