Lol..
I rode tiny little Alloy kinesis XC frames before DJ bikes were a thing. Think I was paying £60 for them. (direct from factory). It was back in the 90s tho.

A zaskar with a chain device, shorty stem and high risers was a proper do it all bike. See also JMC’s specialized M4. But let’s not pretend they were as good as the crop of dj specific bikes that came after and are now available relatively cheap.
I'm 6'2" and would not go back to a shorter frame than my XL Monk. I also wouldn't want the long chainstays that come with the XL PBJ. I tend to spend more time riding the Monk than any of my other bikes, fwiw. Following my son through Crown Mtn dj's

This guy lives riding distance to a bike park he helped to make. He may have extra street cred here.
In other news:
I love my Santa Cruz Chameleon set up 27.5 and/or 29, Fox 160mm 36. It really does everything.
You (whomever might reading this. All 12 of us
1) can keep the steerer long.
2) have a stem/handlebar for whatever terrain you're going to handle. So for example I have 2 stem/handlebar combos that I can quickly swap out. Depending. I do have to plan in advance. But if I have it in XC mode and I do DJ's. it's not a big deal. I'll usually just raise the stem, if it really bothers me. I do prefer my DJ bars/stem. But it's just nice to get out there. Hopefully not crash.
But if you want a real dedicated dirt jumper? Go bmx 24" cruiser? (I see a metric ton of these at the local bike park. And these guys can ride) Super simple and cheap, if you don't go racer mode. A single speed modified XC might just do the same thing for a Shaved Gorilla
The TF Revel titanium dirty jumper bike goes big and has sliding dropouts that help you keep chain tension whether belt driven, single speed, or geared.
