on-one gimp (would have it, but they dont take AmEx- damn!)
.243
Azonic Steelhead
Specialized P series (out of the box DJ/Urban? whodathunkit! the P3 looks killer)

others? I'd like to keep the frame at 500 or less.

OK, let's see:

Curtis make 2 of the most amazing hardtails known to man. T45 +EN46 headtubes, customisable detailing plus proper lifetime 'no questions' guarantee. http://www.curtisbikes.co.uk/
Possibly the best hardtails in existance? Actually come to think of it this would come in at around $1000 so maybe a little out of range. ****ing nice though.

24-7 make the very nice Dark Angel V4 and BSX models. http://www.24sevenbikes.com/

Revell make the 250r (24") and 450r (26") - I have a 250r, see my thread lower down (next page even now) - Very nice. Frames availible with various customisation options (head tube length, v's vs disks etc) http://www.greasycomb.com/revellbikes/index.html

DMR are also very cool - http://www.dmrbikes.com/

On-One are cool, but don't have the best reputation for lasting in the UK. I've seen a few broken in various media.

As well as the steelhead by Azonic there's also the Evo 2 which is supposed to be pretty cool.

Oh god there's far too many to list.

Have a look at http://unrealcycles.com/uc-prod-frames.htm and there's that thread in the Downhill forum with 500+ images of punter's hardtails. That might give you some inspiration.

Hope this helps. Oh yeah - go 24"! :)

I recommend the dmr's. Sick frames. I just built a trailstar recently and I love it. Mainly ride dirt jumps and street. A buddy of mine has a steelhead and he has no complaints.

I ride used Snipes 30-06 hardtail and I really like it, but if I were buying again and had a different budget, I'd get a cromoly framed hardtail.

Will this be strictly for urban/DJing? If so, look for more XCish headtube angles in my opinion (70 or 71 degree angles) that sort of thing.

I know Planet-X is coming out with the Psycho, a pitbull/bommer mix. It should be damn sweet, but for now, it's a canadian only realeased frame. I'll be picking up a pitbull frame for street soon, a super burly 7 lb. steel bitch. I definetly wanna see the new PX frame though.

The 666 is really designed to be a BMX/MTB cross over - The angles are good for DJ/Street and it has the internal detangler in the headtube (not used in photo above). It's pretty nice and if you go direct to a UK supplier you can probably get a WAY better deal on it than I've seen over here in the US. Try to get hold of a copy of MBUK (Moutain Biking UK) magazine - Some Borders carry it - call a UK dealer and even with shipping I'm sure you'll do well especially if really hunt around the smaller retailers. Hardtails are a huge market in the UK right now and the 666 was somewhat oversupplied to the market.

However if you really want to go the full 9 yard go for a Curtis or a Revell or 24-7.

C.

PS most people don't use BMX bars on it, but a regular riser.

Which of the above mentioned (or not yet mentioned) frames would make the best all-around frame? I mean something with geometry that would make it suitable for less heavy trail use as well as urban/street. In other words, which would be ideal if you were only going to own one mountain bike?

Again this kinds of depends on your personal choice (how fast you like steering and how tall you are) but frames like the Santa Cruz Chameleon or the Ellsworth Specialist might be the sort of thing you'd look at.

Check out their geometries and ratios as a guide to what is considered 'all round'.

Good idea on the Chameleon. I've always liked the sound of that bike. And I just looked it up, and I never realized it was only $450! That sounds like a deal to me. Ellsworth is out of my price range, I'd say.

It's all about compromise really. I use a planetx new jackflash for trail riding and street.

If you aim more towards the xc geometry then something like a Chameleon would be better. I presume Chameleons are more xc geometry, santa cruiz frames are a rip off over here, a Chameleon is $700 so I have never actually seen one.

There are loads and loads of decent hardtail frames out there it's just a matter of riding a load and working out the approx geometry you like and choosing a frame that is close.

i just got a kona scab for $180 off wheelworld.com. it is a niice frame and it rides very well. its chromoly so no worries about breakage. also, its nimble and very responsive. also i rode a kona cowan. equally nice i just chose the scab because of price/ it was steel versus the cowan which run abut $500 and is aluminium

Scab:

Good: Steel, Nice all round geometry, even tall guys can use the smaller frames, cheap, look pretty cool.

Bad: Can only take a small tyre in the back. 2.2 I think it was?.. But that depends what you're gonna use it for.

That's a pretty minor bad if you ask me.
