Do you love your country?

...to be honest, I don't even know what that question means.

Does it refer to the actual land encompassed within our borders?
If so, then I love most of America (Oklahoma is sh*t, really). What's left of nature here is really great. We have great mountains, trees, fish, rivers and other stuff.

Does it refer to the people and culture(s)?

I only really "like" some percentage of the people I've ever met, and that number seems to be going down. That could be a personality flaw. I enjoy some aspects of many cultures, and out right reject others (Juggalos, Scientologists, Fundamentalist religious nuts, rollerbladers). "American Culture" at large is just about buying sh*t and trying to get laid as far as I can tell.

Does it refer simply to our system of government, as described in the constitution?

I think it's a pretty good system when you look around at what some other people have, like China or Russia for instance. But on the other hand, when you look at certain powers-that-were, unnecessary wars and resultant deaths, past failures like slavery, prohibition, the seemingly unshakeable christian influence, and other such sh*t stains... I certainly wouldn't say I'm anywhere near in "love" with it. I guess what got me thinking about this is all the teabaggers, constantly clad in stars and stripes gear, trying to look patriotic, while out in the streets, outright slamming the government. It was seen as unpatriotic to do so by these same people when Bush was in charge, and Im not trying to highlight that disparity here, but more or less point out that about half the people hate the government about half the time. So, that can't be it, right?

Is it a combination of the land, the people and the government?

Let's say I like .95 of the land, and say .05 of the people and culture and maybe .62 of the government (I just pulled that out of my ass, I can't actually quantify how much of it I like)... it turns out I love 2.9% of America as whole.

It's basically a stupid f*cking question. That was my main point before I rambled all that crap out.

This thread is going really well.

To the point of it though, if you polled 1000 Americans and asked if they loved America, I think 992 of them would unhesitatingly answer "Yes". Is that just a conditioned response? I mean, it must be, right? Because even a cursory insight into the vagueness of such a question reveals its insanity.

BTW, I realize that being cynical, or too cynical is probably a personality flaw, but while we're on the topic WTF is it with pledging your allegiance to an inanimate piece of cloth? It's f*cking polyester and dye, and the morons at the controls behind it swap out every 4-8 years.

Edit: Sorry, drinking.

My issue with it is that "loving" something usually means that it's infallible. It's like the trailer-trash parents who open the door when the cops show up with Junior in cuffs, and they say "oh, *my* son would never do anything like that..." So suddenly it becomes "oh no, my country would never do that, and if they ever did I'm sure there was a really good reason." Torture? Keeping us safe. Despicable treatment of native Americans? Explainable somehow. Horrible employment statistics of African Americans? Oh, that's not the *country's* fault, that's the fault of the lazy people who won't work. And so on...

Good thread, Burly. :thumb: I like the opportunities that this country has given me but I think a lot of aspects of it are ****. There are many places in the world where I think the quality of life for the common man is better, and some day I might up in take myself there for good. Until that point I'll reap the benefits of having come from a stable, educated family that put me through good schools.

The territorial pissing contests people like to have get old really quick when you get out *there*. I'm with you Shirl, the question essentially has no meaning.

I think I love the idea of this country. Recently I've been very disappointed in it, sure, but I guess deep down I still have hope for the delusional. I still believe that the USA has the strength and capacity to be the best country where anyone can succeed. We just need to get rid of all the assholes. (yes Glenn Beck, I'm looking at you.)

Anyways, with the odd exception of an Olympic hockey game, I don't love the country that I'm from. This place is the same. It's filled with people, some good, some bad, most indifferent.

I think I've said before that I like the country, I just hate the people. Especially the white ones.

edit: vb has it right...once you go to a couple of other countries, you realize that an accident of birth has placed you where you are, and that people are people everywhere.

We really need to be getting away from the idea that there is a ranking of greatness in countries or that one country is or should be the best. This idea has caused more human misery than all the plagues combined.

I agree, although people should occasionally be reminded who is #1 exporter of potassium.

Torture? Keeping us safe. Despicable treatment of native Americans?
tell me: how significant is this? we water boarded about a dozen guys. obama off-shores the fun stuff to the egyptians, jordanians, & kardashians. the indians? before whitey got here, how did they treat themselves? besides, they're getting their day of reckoning w/ all the casinos wiping out pensioners.
Horrible employment statistics of African Americans?
i personally believe the democratic party continues to do more damage than good with the creation of their political co-dependency. how do you inspire a people? tell them they're victims & set up disincentives to succeed, or tell them "si se puede!" have you bothered to check the unemployment rates between AA & black immigrants, and why that is? i would take great offense if i were given a pat on the head & told "there, there; here's a check. it's not your fault you're less than the white man". in the wise words of frank booth "**** that ****!"

We really need to be getting away from the idea that there is a ranking of greatness in countries or that one country is or should be the best.
in theory - sure
i've only been to 6 countries - none in africa or s amer - and i very much like the u.s. in comparison to others, in spite of its many shortcomings

I've had the great fortune to see a lot of countries while serving this one. It's all pretty much the same. I've been treated really well by rural families in Spain, made friends in Germany, seen what real poverty is in Central America, understand why Middle East extremist get so mad..(listen to that wailing ear shattering fingers on the blackboard call to prayer when it's 120 in a sandstorm. You'd hate everybody too) and on and on and on.

Using love in the literal sense of extreme appreciation of culture, geography, climate, etc, I can say i love a lot of countrys, this one included.

In the literal sense, I love this country because I'm familiar with it (it's my home) and I have been blessed with a ton of opportunity and good fortune. Could this have happened in another country? Sure.

I think it's the genetic competitor in us to have to be better than someone else. It helped us survived as a species and led to the evolution of that foam number 1 finger.

If you asked 1000 'merikans this, bet you would 998 yes answers and 2 dumb looks. And 998 different definitions of "loving your country."

Like X3, I have seen many other countries in the service of this one. Many were awesome, some downright crappy. Some made me appreciate what we have here, some made me want to stay there (Helllloooo Italy! :thumb:).

But do I love it? How can you love an intangible concept like "country." With 80 gazillion other idiots in it, of whom i know and or like about 6?

I love my interpretation of this country...but would I die for it without a paycheck? Or benefits for myself and my family? Not bloody likely.

I love my country...not too fond of many of my countrymen...
