I've noticed that the longer I have ridden, and the more cuts, bruises, and broken bones I've come home with, the less seriously my friends take me. I mean, yes, I do get hurt a lot, and more than anyone else I hang out with outside of the biking world, but sometimes it still does hurt. I just think its odd that when I come home all beat up or broken that my rommate, and some other friends burst out laughing before they know I'm OK.

My rommate said somthing to me about it, he said he didnt know whether to take me seriously or not, because I talk about it, and watch video of hurting myself over and over...... I guess I see where he is coming from.

Just wondering, do anyone elses friends not take them seriously when they get hurt?

My friends almost expect me to get hurt because I'm always pushing myself and if I don't get hurt they wonder if I was feel alright durring the ride.

at the end of the longest line
sounds like you need a belly rub...

just take it as them thinking your tough enough to handle all of it, assuming you made it home on your own.

I hate it when people over-react to a new limp or something.

Me and my riding buddies usually dont take each other seriously, but outside people (espeically girls) usually take it too seriously.
I ruptured my spleen last year, and had no external cuts or bruises or anything from the crash but was in horrible pain and just knew something was wrong. The whole group of peolpe i was at the race with didnt beleive me and just made fun of me the whole time. I raced, went to school the monday after and by tuesday finally went to the hospital and then had to stay there for a week. Atleast now they know i was really in a ton of pain.

My experience with non-riders has usually been characterized by their inability to understand why I continue to ride even as I continue to rack up the injuries...kinda rollin eyes, shaking heads, generally dismissive. Yeah, it pisses me off, too. Too few people in today's world respect the process involved in pushing limits; they're OK with the idea and love to see the final product (or stunt or line or ride, photo, etc), but don't have any intrest in knowing how important process is.
My experience with typical riders (xc types, roadies) is sometimes worse! :eviltongu

Yo Mike, how is your nose doing, anyway? :p

Its doing well thanks :) actually just got back from the doctor, he said i'm good to go.

But back on the subject, it doesnt neccisarrily "bother" me that people just dont care anymore, I just think its kind of funny. Because when one of them get hurt, its a totally different story. Everyone is at there every beck and call. and why? "I broke a nail"

I like to just laugh it off with them. My roomates think I'm nuts, but all my friends race DH too so they know what's up. But there is one thing that I've noticed about being hurt, Girls give me the time of day more often when I have some sort of laciration or injury than when I don't. My point, what does it matter if your friends laugh at you, when you can have girls obsessing over whether you're ok to be alone? Just get out and ride, it's all about fun.

The guys I ride with always show concern when any of us crashes. Among us we've shared many a broken bone, concussion, bruise, laceration. or whatever.

If you ride with the same group of guys a lot, they know it when you are pushing your limits and they are stoked when you stick a landing or pull a new trick or pin it through a technical section.
Equally, they are bummed when you are injured in a crash because they are reminded that it could just as easily have been them.

Non-riders, on the other hand, have no clue why you would want to ride in a way to "put yourself at risk." I've gotten many comments from people like, "aren't you getting a little old for that kind of stuff?" (I'm 37). I've basically quit trying to explain why I ride or what kind of riding I do to non-riders.

Ha same here. My friends that I was with when I ruptured my spleen called me a pussy and said I would be fine. They didnt bring me to the hospital until I passed out. When I was concious enough to know what was going on I was at the hospital going into the operating room.

Normal people are WUSSES who like TV remotes a lot, and love to down tons of Coke and eat twinkies while watching reality TV shows.

Those who ride, and those who ride hard have BALLS.

\m/ \m/ Long live those who push themselves.

I think I would agree that non riders make too much of a big deal of getting injured...then again it is a little hard for me to tell because I tend to do stupid things even when I am not riding like almost cutting my finger off so my friends don't see riding as anything different then a normal day for me lol.

Yeah, I have a bit of the same experiences as some of you. I have a few nasty scars that people see and think something really, really bad must have happened. A good part of my forearm on one side is all scarred up from road rash and a few other incidents.

As for people not taking you seriously, I ride by myself most of the time and the friends I have that ride are either beginner mtn riders or mostly roadies. I understand the sentiment, though. Once, I tossed a friend of mine onto his lawn and he kept bitching about it and was in some pain. We only took him half seriously, but he broke his leg/ankle in 3 places.

I agree, only problem is my girlfriend used to be a forensic science major, so NOTHING I can do to myself will phase her......

EXACTLY! Non-riders see it more or less idiotic of us to do the things we do. I see it as anything else in life you work hard and sacrifice for; a job, a diploma, "a woman", and so on. It all comes with bumps and bruises, just not all the same kind.
