Just finished all three books written by Gillian Flynn. What a mind f@ck! Dark, twisted, and totally addictive.

I've read the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings probably half a dozen times but never picked up the Silmarillion or Children of Hurin before.

Bought the 10Yr old a Kindle Fire with her own money. The Kindle Kids Unlimited turns out is pretty useless because it's for 8 and under.
Anyone have tips or tricks to building her a collection of good books that are somehow free or near free? This thing doesn't come with a really easy to use starter program and there don't seem to be any good websites dedicated to using it on the cheap.

might be a bit advanced, but there are a lot of classics available for free from Amazon. Like Call of the Wild, Count of Monte Cristo, The Time Machine, Around the World in 80 Days, Journey to the Center of the Earth, etc...

Check out your local library. Most of them have systems where you can check out ebooks online. You might get on a waiting list for really popular books, but they e-mail you when it's available and then you'll have a couple of days to download it. The loans expire in ±3 weeks, but it's a convenient way to read books for free.

I read down the page into that but it went into a multi-paragraph thing about having to pay per megabite downloaded? I can't do the math on MB downloaded and how much that is per book, so stopped reading.

This. Her school library may have ebooks too...mine does. I haven't had to pay for a book in a while.
I believe I've recommended this book before. Until mankind crash lands on the moon, or mars, cobbles his sh/t back together, and returns to earth, there will never be a more amazing survival story.
