Florida is just transplanted Northerners, and VA/NC was a fluke.
I wouldn't exactly call it a fluke. NC is a fairly progressive southern state and while there are plenty of conservative voters, there are some pretty sizeable pockets (bubbles) of more centrist to liberal voters.
Since 1964 it's gone Democratic.... once before '08 (1976 for Carter). I will grant you that it's gotten far more progressive than it was previously, and even now it's a tossup between Romney and Obama. Will be interesting to see...
