Oil rig explosion reported in Gulf of Mexico

(CNN) -- An oil rig has exploded 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana, with 13 people overboard, including one injured, the Coast Guard said Thursday morning.

The explosion happened south of Vermilion Bay on the Vermilion Oil Rig 380, which is owned by Mariner Energy, said John Edwards, a chief petty officer with the Coast Guard in New Orleans.

Thirteen people have been accounted for, said Petty Officer Bill Colclough of the Coast Guard. One person is injured, he said, and all are headed to a hospital in Terrebonne Parish.

latest news.... a sheen of oil has been spotted. Supposedly the source is storage tanks on the platform and not an active leak.

The Coast Guard is saying there are no immediate signs of a spill from an oil platform fire in the Gulf of Mexico off the Louisiana coast.
All 13 crew members were rescued from the water in the second such disaster in the Gulf in less than five months.
The Coast Guard initially reported an oil sheen a mile long and 100 feet wide had begun to spread from the site of the fire, about 200 miles west of the site of BP's massive spill. But officials said at a Thursday afternoon news conference that boats at the platform have not seen any oil sheen.
