my wife and i are doing a 8HR race that starts at 4:00pm.
i have great direction skills but have not used a compass much.

starts with a run to lake snorkeling to 2 check points. kayaking
then 10 or so MTB train miles, then bushwhacking to the rest of the checks as it gets dark.

should be fun.

anyone have any advice on extra things to take?
we are looking to finish not win.

My mom does those, but in the 24-36 hrs range.

You always have to eat and drink, even when your not thirsty or hungry, you gotta eat. Other than that, go out and have fun, and your lucky your wife is cool enough to do an AR.

My advice would to prepare further in advance next time.

And no, I'm not being a smart ass, I'm being serious.
