Yes, but a big problem with English is that when the pronunciation of words changed, but the spelling did not. The great vowel shift is an example of this. When this happened in German, they were smart enough to amend the spelling.And, like all language, it evolves continuously.
Maybe English is more prone to drift due to it being used so extensively, but in widely differing regions so intermixed with other tongues it tends to pick up and integrate local words, dialects etc?
