I mean, at this point, Gaetz not being appointed AG would be totally inconsistent with what has happened so far...

Even with the prospect of the wholesale dissolution of your way of life? Because everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, would get vastly more expensive if all of our financial, governmental, health, education, roads, sanitation, phone/internet, etc, etc, became significantly disrupted.

I do, indeed, understand the PUNK AF sentiment. But millions of people would die from tainted food, lack of medications, zero oversight of transportation safety, yadda yadda.

Seems like it will be a good time to steal and cheat though to get ahead. Anything fucking goes.

I'm not in a position to control the outcomes and it's heart warming to see all my conservative friends so happy and positive about the future.

It gives me hope because I don't know how it's going to work out.

One thing I know for sure, alcoholics hit rock bottom before they change direction.

Copied this from another place. Is this an actual possibility?

"Hope it's wrong, but I'm hearing through the grapevine about this bonkers plan: Trump would adjourn both Houses of Congress under Article II, section 3, and then recess-appoint his Cabinet.

As predicate for Trump's exercise of adjournment power, one House of Congress would seek other House's consent to adjourn and be denied. So Speaker of House would need to be complicit in evisceration of Senate's advice-and-consent role.

House Speaker Mike Johnson needs to say NO to this right away."

Anyone...? Anyone...? Bueller...?

@ALEXIS_DH , would you mind weighing in on your perspective of this from an (educated) South American perspective?

Because this is how you end up with corruption at every single level, imo.
I'm sure Matt Gaetz, Elon Musk, and *checks notes* a fox news host are up for high level spots in the Trump administration through hard work and academic prowess.

I read somewhere that corruption is rooted in weak institutions and a weak rule of law.

The best thing the US has (besides the military) is its judicial system, i believe. Justice is fast, reliable and largely fair. Of course its far from perfect, but its far far better than most of the world.

Trump and his yes man picks is the opposite of rule of law. Hope it doesnt permeate society.
Once you get people convinced they can get away with shit, rampant corruption begins.

The latest episode of Freakanomics has a lengthy interview with Fareed Zakaria who basically says to expect corruption now similar to what happens in India, and then gives the example that Tesla stock went up 20% in the 2 days following the election. Not because Elon is some kind of business genius (clearly), not because of some change in the economy or business practices, but simply because of his proximity to Trump. Business leaders fell over themselves trying to congratulate and fawn over Trump on Shitter because they recognize that they need to curry favor with the president to maintain whatever business. If that's not the beginning of out right, naked corruption, than I don't know what is.

This should help lower prices.

“If we get tariffs, we will pass those tariff costs back to the consumer.” The company expects to raise prices even before the tariffs take effect, anticipating how these new policies will impact its margins.

That was a great listen.

I’m starting to see YouTube videos and smaller news article links and social media posts about Trump voters “already regretting” their decision. Are they really? Well, at least any more than any voter has regretted a decision in any other election. I can’t help but suspect the social media posts with anecdotes could easily be bots.

Edit - the fact there’s a Boing Boing link that shows up when searching tells me this is a clickbait issue.

This certainly will negatively impact the economy to start and will likely disproportionately impact smaller businesses moreso than larger. Stresses placed on these smaller businesses will probably result in the consolidation through sales and M&A across certain industries and sectors, with these more 'stable' entities likely needing to further invest in tools such as automation similarly to how large scale Agribusinesses came to be and were able to invest in mechanization post Operation Wetback in 1954.

Setting emotion aside and ignoring the fact that this will most certainly be a human rights fiasco, I can forcefully make myself empathize with the notion of 'disrupting' the status quo in order to more rapidly generate an information, engineering, and automation based economy to replace that which is still predominately manual labor. Heck, this is the direction this ship is probably heading towards regardless of disruption or not. Then I realize that we live in a post-moral society so who is going to be the beneficiary of this shift in economy when there is an erosion of justice, fairness, and common values? Probably not the common man/woman.

So basically power will continue to be consolidated by certain individuals/entities and we'll advance one step closer to the Silicon Valley Tech Bro Utopia of governance. Hooray!

Not my coworker, he's giddy. I joked that the apartments they are building next to us better get done before the end of the year because the National Guard is going to sweep 3/4 of the workforce. He seemed to think it was all talk and there's no way he would even try to mass deport folks.

It’s like the bible. It’s very serious and literal except when it’s not. Sure, sometimes you need to “interpret” or ignore some sections but other than that it’s the very word of god and answers all your questions if you follow it exactly, except when you don’t want to.

From an old friends facebook post.
For context Waitangi park is about 2-3km away, you can see the crowd streaming in on that road on the top left of the pic.

It took more than two hours for the crowd to pass a point. At the time the spaces in this photo were filled with people, others were still waiting to be able to leave Waitangi Park. That's big! Plans I had to meet up with people I knew were going to be there had no chance at all, and Ian and I were far too far away to see or hear anything happening in front of Parliament. We were stationed down near the cenotaph next to a lovely guy whose whānau had come down from Auckland on a bus. Yesterday he decided he had to be here so told his boss he wouldn't be in today, and drove through the night to be part of this. It's not very often that you have the chance to be part of a great day in our nation's history.

I've never seen so many sniveling men (I'm assuming your pronouns, so I apologize if I misgendered any of you). Just grow a set please! You're all going to be just fine. You'll all get through it and may even be better than you ever imagined, so take a chill pill. If you don't believe me it's not too late to move to another country. As your far left media states, you'll have until 1/20/2025 until the orange meanie rounds everyone up everyone on the far left and places you in interment camps! There has to be a country that checks all your woke boxes somewhere in this big beautiful world. Please go before it's too late, otherwise buckle up! It's going to be a fun 4 years!!!!
